I like Marcus Smart, but I really like the potential of Romeo Langford.  Scouting Video on him produced by ESPN draft guru Mike Schmidt explains why.

Oh this is funny. Don't trade WHO? I remember the same type posts about James Young. Romeo has been here how long? How many games has he played? Is he up for a contract extension yet? C'mon - trade him in a heartbeat!

Lol. We 100% need to trade Romeo if it makes this team better. I don't care how many scouting videos you throw out there, the best ability is availability and he's barely played in his time here. Let him get on some other team's injury report.

Don’t trade him for the sake of trade. If he returns something material then yea despite his “upside” lol
OTOH Danny always finds ways to draft these guys with “potential” and they always somehow are not given chance to show and reach that potential and that forces threads like this lol

My point is:

Smart apparently has much more trade value than Romeo.  Romeo can replace Smart's value, and long term (starting next season) will exceed his value to the team.

So why would you insist on trading him rather than Smart?

You hope that happens. There's no definitive way to know that. He could just as likely come back and injure himself again.

I'm not 100% sure that Romeo can replace Smart; but I am 100% sure that if you trade Romeo now, you are not going to get fair value back. Also, if we are trading Smart, we absolutely need to see if Romeo can fill that Smart role before letting him go. He is cost-controlled also, which is going to be extremely important with the impending ballooning salaries on our team next season.

Don't trade him just to trade him and definitely be cautious about trading him at a time when his value is likely low but if he somehow becomes a piece that allows a good deal to get done, I have no problem trading him.  I actually hope they don't trade him though.  I would really like to see what he can do.

Romeo is not a throw in.

He is a valued asset. And if he brings back comparable or better value, that is fine. If not, keep him. Too valuable to discard as a throw in.

You don't trade Romeo right now because he has virtually zero value.  Contrary to what most fans seem to think, you're supposed to trade guys WITH value.

His injury history puts him on a similar track as RWIII (they played the same amount of games their rookie season and less games in their sophomore season). If Rob would've been in a trade last season, he would've been a fraction of the value he's at this season and I think Romeo will have a similar value increase.

We've only seen glimpses of Romeo's offensive ability and he's going to need more seasoning on that end (although he already has an excellent ability (vision) to see open driving lanes and is athletic enough to get to the rim), but the ability he's shown defensively is already above average (his lateral quickness, strength, and ability to block shots is impressive from the guard position).

He has enough defensive highlights that you can show NBA highlights instead of pre-draft scouting reports.

TP.

I'd like to keep Romeo to get a look at what he actually is as a player because we just haven't seen it. But if it comes down to someone wanting him and it's between him and Smart, I'll drive Romeo to the airport.

"Romeo can replace Smart's value, and long term (starting next season) will exceed his value to the team." Well this is the premise you need to prove isn't it?

We don't know that Romeo can replace Smart's value.

Agreed.

You don't trade Romeo because in all likelihood, he's going to be undervalued in trades. But if he's getting valued at Marcus Smart level, then that means he's actually being overvalued so no need to hang on to him anymore.
