  • Let's Go Celtics!
I have a theory that part of the reasoning for the Celtics bringing in Tristan Thompson was to have a cost controlled option for next season should Daniel Theis get a large offer in free agency that they deem too expensive. So I'm curious, what do we think Theis' next deal will look like? I think we can all agree he's played well enough to get a deal beyond the paltry $5m he makes now but he's also had knee issues. I think he gets a deal slightly above the MLE. Maybe 3 years at $36m.

Curious to get some thoughts here... What's Daniel Theis worth as an unrestricted FA?

SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan

I'd say 2 years $20m would be reasonable.

Someone will offer him ~14m per I think. Just my guess.

Here is question.  If you think you won’t be able to resign him in the offseason would you consider trading him by the deadline?  Tough because he is a really solid player, but maybe you can get another piece that is cost controlled or even just a pick.  I think in the end I’d rather just keep him.  Underrated player.

Yeah, what did the Raps give Baynes? Like 7 million a year.

I have had the same thought. Thompson serves a few purposed. 1. Vet insurance if R Williams wasn’t ready/healthy 2. A salary to help match trades 3. Insurance for Theis.

I suspect Theis like Thompson is a MLE type player who gets a 3yr 28-30 mill deal.

I think he will get a contract near what he makes now.  I just don't think there is going to be a really big market for someone like Theis and the reality the teams that could really use him are generally going to only have the taxpayer MLE available to acquire him.  I can't see a rebuilding team with a ton of cap space using it on Theis.  I suppose a team like the Mavs or Heat might have a use for him, but I think he'd be so far down on their lists that it just won't happen.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Bigs - Shaquille O'Neal, Victor Wembanyama
Wings -  Lebron James
Guards - Luka Doncic

yup

But I doubt Celts can afford it

Just too many mouths to feed, but not enough cash or tax Wyc is willing to pay

Theis plays well in Brad's system and deserves $10M/year

Whoever offers 9-11 million per season +  longest years... is what I would sign if I was Theis.   Could be his last good contract

Here is question.  If you think you won’t be able to resign him in the offseason would you consider trading him by the deadline?  Tough because he is a really solid player, but maybe you can get another piece that is cost controlled or even just a pick.  I think in the end I’d rather just keep him.  Underrated player.

Brad trusts him.  I’d keep Theis and dump Thompson if cost is an issue.

naw

because you trade for a vet like Theis at the deadline

So just keep him and if he walks after this season, he walks

Danny just needs to find another dude like him from overseas
