“We had hoped Kyrie would stay forever and lead us all the way,” Grousbeck admitted. “He’s on maybe the best team on the league right now and so that’s that. That change touched off a lot of stuff because he left, we weren’t maybe able to recruit free agents in the same way, and a bit of a domino effect. But it is what it is. We went for it with Kyrie. We had a good year with him. He tried hard and then he moved on.”

Above is perhaps the single most pathetic commentary I think I've ever read coming out of the Boston Celtics brass. Just unbelievable. Kyrie Irving leaving has absolutely zero to do with where we are now - less than zero, way less than zero. We are where we are because of how "we" chose to deal with Kyrie Irving's BS. We should have cut bait from that guy after about his 3rd interview in Boston. It was clear by the you 100% cannot have him as part of your leadership without having major alpha talents around him (LeBron, Durant, Harden, etc.). Anthony Davis was a pipe dream and if Durant was coming to Boston we would have known it and Kyrie would have sent 1000% crystal clear smoke signals he was staying. Ainge royally screwed the Kyrie experiment up, as he did the Horford and Hayward exits. Just brutal mis-management on Ainge's part.
Red Auerbach's commentary would have been something like this:

 "It was pretty clear early on that Kyrie wasn't "the right fit for us" (i.e, the guys is cancerous tool bag) so we decided to move on. He wanted to go back to Brooklyn so we traded him for Jarrett Allen, Joe Harris and Levert (we were surprised, honestly, that they included Levert, but we also understand what a special talent Irving is and again it was unfortunate we had to move on from him - that wasn't the plan. Then, while we had concerns about Hayward's health, we loved how he complimented Jaylen and Jayson, so we front loaded his deal, got him the money he wanted and we're hopeful he stays healthy the majority of the contract - and to be honest if he's only fully healthy for two of the four years that might just be enough for us to throw up a couple more banners. Lastly, while we didn't love Rozier's media tour, the guys love playing with him and that same bravado is what makes him fearless on the court. We've got some young guys we like in development, and the rest as they say, is history". Wink, cigar...

Listen to the interview and you'll likely recognize he wasn't lamenting the loss of Kyrie, he was answering a question that asked about the Celtics' four-year trajectory.

I listened to the interview. Wyc made sense.

Kyrie is one of those guys that can attract talent. Their plan was to have Kyrie, a star attracted by Kyrie (I guess?), Horford, Jaylen, Jayson, and Marcus Smart. That team would be awesome.

That didn't work out. Plan B.

He also made the point that we made it to the final four 3/4 years. For a developing team, that's awesome.

As my buddy Sully says, "You're a pretenda if you think they're a contenda."

Their best two players are young. Enjoy the ride.

Had the cards been played right, right now we would be the leaders of the league with Irving, Durant (pal of Kyrie; Hayward sign-and-trade with GSW would have done it), Tatum, JB, Smart and Horford (pal of KD).

Instead, we’ve got a dinosaur of a GM who does not appear to respect players, which is why Kyrie, Horford and Hayward all jumped ship. It’s a players’ league. The sooner Wyc forces Ainge into retirement, the sooner we’ll be back in title contention.

Exhibit A in the history of Ainge’s level of respect for players and legacies: He suggested to Red that he trade Larry Legend. Instead, Red traded Danny.

Exhibit B that the lack of respect continues: IT.
