I think the mistake was not trading him for McDermott and Turner
We could have done both. Keep the 30th pick, trade Kanter to Portland, and S&T Hayward to Indy for Turner / McDermott / #1.
Do McDermott and Turner really fix any major issues for this team?
You're adding a couple of non-passing guys who don't really create shots for themselves or others.
I guess they're proven NBA level players and this team needs those, except not at the 5, where even without Tristan Thompson the Celts already have two centers that need time.
Suppose if they had traded for Turner they could have traded Theis.
I'll always be skeptical that the Indiana trade was ever a genuine option so long as Charlotte was there ready to pay Gordo an enormous annual sum.
This team has lots of issues:
* Lack of depth
* Lack of shooting
* Lack of defensive playmakers
* Lack of floor stretching from our bigs
That trade would have solved all of this issues. While our ball movement might leave something to be desired, I think it's easier for our stars to move the ball if they know that there's a legitimate NBA player on the receiving end of their passes.
And, Danny talked today about "missed opportunities" in the off-season. Indy's GM has basically confirmed that Hayward was ready to sign there. And, it's not like Charlotte's money was that much more than Indy's; Zach Lowe has heard they were offering as much as $112 million, and that's clearly where his family wanted to be.
