Possibly The Only Potential Way to Dump Kemba’s Contract..,

Against the defending champs, no less.

Yes, people only see age 34 and think Horford is toast/overpaid. Or “in Danny we trust” is the herd mentality and since he opted for Kemba instead of Horford last year, that absolutely must be the right call (even though Danny is not perfect and may realize now that we’ve been missing Horford for 1.5 years now).

Like Tom Brady and Karl Malone, Horford takes supreme care of his body and has a high playing IQ. He may very well be a contributing starter 4-5 years from now even, just like Malone was back in his late 30s. His high salary is not that bad when you consider the dues he paid, and how he can still bring it like he did last night against the defending champs.

Clearly we made the wrong move going with Kemba instead of sticking with Rozier/Horford. Our record says it all. What’s done is done, but if the chance is there to salvage things, let’s do it.

After much thought last night, another potential way to really make things right:

BOS In: Horford, Rubio
BOS Out: Kemba, TPE, ‘21 2nd, ‘22 2nd

Why We Do It: Get rid of Kemba’s contract/uncertainty, and upgrade our passing at PG and front court performance. All without risking going over the luxury line this year or next.

UTA In: Kemba
UTA Out: Conley

Why They Do It: Conley’s contract expires after this year, and staying in Utah is probably not a priority. They already have a capable PG in Jordan Clarkson to take over for Conley, so they could see Kemba as a spark-plug 6th man and hope he reverts back to form. They won’t have cap space to sign anybody with the dollars going away when Conley goes away, so they might as well keep Conley’s dollars on the books via Kemba and hope he reverts to form. Unlike us, they can take that gamble with Kemba since they’re already on their way to contending for a title, with or without Conley...

OKC In: Conley
OKC Out: Horford

Why They Do It: Conley’s contract is expiring, so they free up cap space by moving Horford and just taking on Conley.

MN In: BOS ‘21 2nd, BOS ‘22 2nd
MN Out: Rubio

Why They Do It: $17 million in cap space and a couple extra picks. Better haul than they gave up to get Rubio to begin with. Nobody else in the league has a TPE to take on Rubio with, and reportedly Rubio wants out after being moved to MN by PHX, so this move makes a ton of sense.

Tell me this is not a huge improvement for us, especially when you consider how much better Brown and Tatum perform with facilitators like Rubio, Pritchard and Horford rather than a scoring PG like Kemba:

Smart/Teague/Langford
Brown/Ojeyele/Nesmith
Tatum/Theis/G. Williams
Horford/TT/R. Williams

The production of Rubio and Horford combined is roughly 19-20 PPG, 9-10 APG, and 9-10 RPG. How is Kemba and a couple second-rounders worth more than that this year and next?!?

After seeing Horford’s performance last night, and considering how good of a facilitator Rubio was last year along with the fact we know Tatum and Brown look up to Horford and we’ve missed his veteran leadership and intangibles, I firmly believe that such a Brad Stevens-led team can get us a title this year and next.

We gotta do something! We cannot hope for something that might never happen, and watch us miss the playoffs or get knocked out in the first-round. We all know Kemba is not the guy we needed last year or this year. Guys like Rubio and Horford are what we need to complement a AAA wing duo like the Jay Bros.

Teague is retiring after this year. Other than Smart and Theis, we really do not have any tradeable assets, and what we can get for them is not worth it. There’s really no way we can secure a Harrison Barnes, let alone a John Collins, unless we’re willing to mortgage future (2025-beyond) unprotected picks, probably in combination with swaps. Who wants to do that for a guy who’ll never get us over the hump but merely keep us on the proverbial ECF treadmill?

Let’s face it: The best we can hope for at this point is Kemba and Timelord for Horford and Hill. That might get us back into contention for a top 3 slot in the East. This is the way. Or tank.
