The Celtics are scoping out the trade market.

Late Saturday evening, I received a flurry of texts from multiple executives around the league who said the Celtics were up to something. What they’re up to is unclear, but league sources have long said Boston is searching for upgrades to bolster its wing and big man position.

Tristan Thompson became trade eligible this weekend, and with a $9.3 million salary, he could be a perfect fit for a deal. So could Daniel Theis with his expiring $5 million contract. The Celtics have young players like Romeo Langford and Aaron Nesmith, in addition to all of their future first-round draft picks, which could position them to make a bid for a big fish such as Bradley Beal if he were to become available, or a role player like P.J. Tucker or Thaddeus Young.

The Celtics are a good team, but they feel incomplete. With both Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown performing at an All-NBA level, Danny Ainge should be aggressive in increasing his team’s Finals odds.

Increased trade buzz along with Thompson becoming trade eligible is intriguing to speculate around

I think Ainge and Zarren are notorious for working the phones pre-trade deadline annually. They kick a ton of tires. Happy that's the case again this year.

I agree this is just part of being a good GM. However this season it does feel like the Cs have more pressure to actually make a move. Tatum and Brown are now both playing at a level where the teams championship window is opening. The ticking clock of the TPE and Kemba's struggles make this a really important deadline and off-season for building towards another banner.

It is funny how the "take" on Ainge seems to oscillate.  We know he is not afraid to make a big trade if he feels it is the right deal.  We also know that he will walk away and not do a deal over doing it just to do a deal.

Right now, the "chatter" among fans seems to be critical that he didn't do the deal with Indy, that there is always a lot of talk but that in the end, he never does a deal at the deadline (as he hasn't the last few years).  But everyone is forgetting that this is still Trader Dan.

This most recent rumor seems very reasonable.  It is also consistent with Ainge's statements.  They are looking for a big who can shoot.  Probably a lot of other teams are also.

This rumor mentioned Bradley Beal, PJ Tucker, and Thad Young.  I would be stunned if we end up with Beal, I simply don't believe there is a deal there.  I would be disappointed if our "big" deal was PJ Tucker, he is 6'-5" (smaller than Grant Williams) and currently averaging less than 5 pts and 5 rebs in 30 min per game.  And I would be happy if we ended up with Thad Young.  Young is more swing than PF but at 6'-8" he does provide some size and otherwise brings things we need.

Agree with your POV on Beal and Tucker. I can't say I follow the fascination with Young though. Does he really move the needle in any meaningful way for this Cs team, or he just shuffling deck chairs, essentially?

I don't see how he impacts a playoff series vs the likes of MIL, NJ or others....

Bradley Beal would be a poor fit with the two Js. Too much usage. Much prefer Barnes. Stop winning so much, Kings!!

If you have a chance to bring in a star player you do it, and figure out how to make things work.  Figuring these things out is the job of management.  Coaches and GMs are far easier to find than All-NBA players.

I think Danny will target someone like a Mike Muscala

Use a 2nd + Carsen Edwards.  See if a deal can be hammered out

you may think its funny but the guy can shoot the 3 and is a big player.   Two things Danny has been talking about

There isn't many options for players like this around the league

Bertans (but he does come with a long contract),  Vucevic is likely not going to be traded/Celts can't afford him.

Olynyk... maybe if Heat are not a playoff team this season.  But a cheaper alternative is Muscala

I don't see how he impacts a playoff series vs the likes of MIL, NJ or others....

As to Young, in relation to our current rotation of swings and bigs, yes, I think he does provide an impactful upgrade.  Getting some incremental improvement at low cost to me is a realistic goal.  Now if Danny can figure out a way to turn Kemba into an even better big, great, but I am not expecting that.

From Keith Smith:

Main thing I took away from talking to front office folks around the NBA over the past week: There aren't really any sellers right now. One team told me "It's going to be a seller's market. Whoever does sell is going to get good stuff for not giving up all that much."

Paging Mr Walker. Paging Kemba Walker there’s a phone call for you from Orlando...

So if the Celtics trade Kemba for a skilled big, does that make them a buyer or a seller?  Are we selling Kemba or buying a big as I assume you are thinking trade for Vucevic?

I am not sure I accept Keith Smart's generalization or even understand what he means by it.  It is not like we are going to "sell" Kemba for an expiring contract and picks.  I would think the "contract" coming back would need to be a useful player for us.

In the case of Orlando, if they want to offer up Vucevic or Gordon or Fournier, they are by definition sellers, right?  And that would make us the buyers.  I don't know if it is a buyer or seller market but I think we are buyers.
