If Kemba is healthy, and if Rob and Romeo develop as we hope, our best five is Kemba-Smart-Jaylen-Tatum-TimeLord.

Rotation would include Pritchard-Romeo-Theis-Thompson-Grant.

Lot of ifs, but the place I see a trade is at center, not Smart. Smart was probably our most consistent playoff performer last year - and if he continues to embrace his new role he complements the starters perfectly. On a tiny sample size of five games, he’s taking 5.5 threes a game and hitting 43%. He is taking more catch and shoots, especially from the corner, in the flow of the offense. He’s also dishing 5.6 assists per game. This is what we need from him on the offensive side of the court. We know what he does on the other side.

Romeo is needed wing depth. If he defends as well as he showed last year he can contribute right away and if he stays healthy he has a nice ceiling on offense.

the ball movement with Payton on the floor is clearly better.  But Marcus is an incomparable defender.  The question is,  how does Brad play them both. with our current team, we desperately need another scorer.  The starting lineup of Thompson, Theis, Tatum, Brown & Smart has 2 scorers and 3 non-scorers, each has no real offensive game.   How do we get the needed scoring?  Could we trade Smart for that player?  Tatum and Brown cannot be expected to bring what is needed from them every night.  Even though Gordon was way over paid and we only needed him now and then -  there were nights when we needed him, and those nights are still out there - we need another scorer!

I mean, Kemba is one of the premier scorers in the NBA. Barring a total catastrophe, he will come back and at least give us Bubble Kemba numbers. We also have the TPE. No rush to trade Marcus if we can help it - unless of course we get back a major upgrade.

Perhaps when Pritchard learns to defend three positions at an elite level this thread will make sense.

I am not advocating for trading Smart, but I do believe Romeo has the potential to at least defend three positions at very good level. It's Romeo, not Pritchard, who has the potential to make Smart a tradable asset...but he has to get healthy stay healthy.

Romeo will have lighting strike from the sky into himself 3 times before he can hold a candle to smarts defense, heart, intensity and desire.

wish we could turn smart/kemba into one guy that does what they both do.   maybe that's what danny interest in holiday was.

Why would you want to trade a guy that has so much versatility and is on a team friendly deal? He can cover 1-4 and is top defender in the league. He’s also arguably the heart of this Celtics team. Pritchard looks promising at the PG position, but that’s it. He’s not big enough or strong enough to cover most 2’s. Suggesting trading him, just for the heck of it doesn’t make much sense to me.

Good Lord.

First there's a 20+ thread with comparisons of P2 to Steve Nash and Stockton........NOW P2 is taking Smart's place?

Look I LOVE the kid P2 and he's got a bright future in the NBA and with BOS but PLEASE let's put the brakes on things for a min LOOL.

Next we'll be suggesting we trade Pritchard straight up for James Harden.

Very weird take considering they play different positions and have different strengths
it may be a new year, but apparently CS still has silly thread premises.  :P

lol ... Romeo? lol He cant even stay on the court. Why dont Cs fans appreciate that they are pretty much lucky to be paying Marcus Smart only $12m a year in a league that has paid players like Biyombo $18 million/yr. Romeo? Come on man.

Lol - you do realize next year is the last year on Smart's contract, right? People keep responding to this comment, but not reading my next one where I clarified my position.

And, I agree, Romeo has yet to prove he can stay on the court consistently, but I believe the Cs are quite high on him. They considered him important enough to bring back in the playoffs even though he needed wrist surgery. Why not, ya know, give him a chance to prove whether or not he is an NBA player before laughing him off? These dismissive takes on Romeo are likely to age very poorly.

I mean, yeah, Romeo did do better and impressed with his defense at the end of last year. But it seems crazy to me that at this point we're even talking about or even realistically considering Romeo - a guy not know for his defensive prowess coming into the league and who only showed defensive promise in a handful of games last year - as a potential replacement for the best and most versatile guard defender in the league and one of the best overall perimeter defenders in the league.

I definitely wasn't trying to make that point (notice how Roy said 'elite' for Smart and I said 'very good' for Romeo). I was more pointing out that Pritchard's ascension to legendary status has nothing to do with Smart. However, a similar trajectory by Romeo could make the loss of Smart more bearable if a trade opportunity arose or if his next contract is out of reach for the Cs.

I agree with jambr. Romeo makes Smart expendable at the right price. Smart has very high trade value. Packaged with the TPE could yield something irresistible. Has nothing to to with Fast PP ascension.

Here's hoping that Smart retires a Celtic. His shot selection is an ongoing issue, but he's an elite defender, a very good passer and a reliable ball handler. The guy is 6'3'' and he can switch 1 through 4 on defense! If you ask me, the only guard that is a more versatile defender than Smart is Ben Simmons (who isn't exactly a guard to begin with).
