Jayson Tatum's 5-year max extension will pay him $163 million with an incentive structure that could see the deal escalate to up to $195.6 million for making first team All-NBA. Will start at $28.1m to 33.7m next season, going all the way to $37.1m to $44.5m in '25-'26.

Thanks. However I thought if a player made all team (1st to 3rd), they were elgible for super max?

They do, but you're allowed to put in incentives that will push the contract to a higher percentage of the cap. So Tatum will qualify for 30% if he makes the 3rd team again, but we'll only pay him, say, 28% for that (and 29% for 2nd team, 30% for 1st team. That sort of thing).

The Raptors did the same thing with Siakam
I'm bitter.

Supermax is only for players coming off of their 2nd contracts with the original team that drafted them. It allows them to sign for 35% instead of 30%, even though they don't have the 10 years of required service.

What Tatum and Mitchell are getting is a variation of the supermax for players coming off of their rookie contracts. It allows them to sign for up to 30% of the cap, rather than only 25%, with All-NBA incentives.

That's a very Tatum friendly extension. Looks like he'll get the full 30% for any all nba team + a fifth year player option.

So now we have:
Kemba: 2 years + player option
Smart: 2 years
Brown: 4 years
Tatum: 1 year + 4 years + player option

Not what we wanted to hear. Don't get me wrong, I am psyched to have Tatum locked up long-term, but none of the other max rookie extensions signed recently have a 5th year player option. Danny getting desperate after a so-so offseason, I guess.

Edit: just reported Mitchell's 5th year is a PO, too. So at least we're not alone.

Officially on the clock.  We've got 5 years to make the most of this era.  No guarantees after that.

The four year extension with the 5th year option to give the player financial security is pretty standard.  I don't think the Celts had much choice on that.  We have Tatum for 5 more years.  We don't want him to exercise that final year option because it would mean something has gone wrong for him.

I trust that Danny has a vision for what he's going to try to do over the next 5 years to maximize this window.

No matter what happens, we will have had Tatum for the first 8 years of his career, which are likely to include his peak.

Cross that off the list, the most important thing to take care of this off-season is done.

Minor sense of relief. But after the Hayward drama the thought of waiting on Tatum to opt in or out 5 years from now bothered me for a moment lol
My pic is now, and will be Fab Melo until he posts his first official NBA dbl-dbl. This may be permanent.

More great news :)

So we look up two budding stars (The Jays), get a rejuvenated (and healthier) Kemba back, more defined roles, draft help, BIG HELP and of course our Master at Arms Marcus still here.

Can't wait until this season starts.

How great is it that training camp starts in less than 2 weeks!

From what I've been reading about Nesmith and Pritchard, C's could have 2 rookies who can contribute. Bench could be a plus for the C's this season.

After a very short off season the rooks will probably get at least spot minutes as they are the most well rest players on the roster.

Probably 4 years.. there will be countless rumors and reports leading into the season before the option year. The drama is guaranteed

Do yourself a favor and think of it as an extra four years. He's going to opt out and become a UFA unless he's injured. Simple as that.
