Bogdan Bogdanovic is a RFA. He is seeking $18 mm per year for 4 years.  He is only 28 years old. He would be a perfect fit for our team. I would start him and return Smart to the bench, where he belongs.

Kemba
Bogdan
Brown
Tatum
Theis

Smart
Teague/Pritchard
Langford
Thomas/Time Lord

Let's assume we get a trade exception from Charlotte in the Hayward signing.  Would the amount of the trade exception equal his first year salary of  +- $30 mm?  Or can we reduce it by taking back some salary that the Hornets don't want?  Just so long as we don't reduce it below $20 mm or so.  Would this put us into the luxury tax if we did it, or is there a clever way to avoid triggering that? Seems like any sign and trade where we become a tax payer doesn't work for the Celtics.

Let's say we get a full $30 mm trade exception.  Would there be any advantage to signing Tristan Thomas with $10 mm of that (and thereby no need to use the midlevel exception) and the other $20 mm in a trade for Bogdanovic?

Now, the hard part:

How would we incentivize Kings into a sign and trade?  Give them the trade exception plus what?  Future draft picks?  Would we be able to include Nesmith or Pritchard, since they have not been signed yet?  We have to make it worthwhile for the Kings.  Don't want to give away the farm here, but need to be realistic. I could see the Kings being very interested in taking back Nesmith, as a future replacement for Buddy Hield, who is a pain in the butt there.

Of course all this assumes Bogdanovic would want to come here. But why not? He would fit in perfectly. He would be an excellent replacement for Hayward, only more durable and younger.   The fit would be ideal.

What do you think?

Totally plausible the Cs could send the Hornets a pick and the Kings a player or a pick (or both) for facilitating this.

GH replacement?

that kid is a straight shooter/scorer at the gurad position.

he played on terrible teams with no real success, why would we want to commit to him on a 4 year contract, he is a role player on a good team that's it.

i can't say this has been the offseason i have dreamed about, at worst i thought we were to get turner for hayward and make some smaller moves to fullfill our roster, but bogdan is not a small move, nor at the position of need.

what doesn't kill you makes you stronger

I think technically what you say is possible. There's a ton of restrictions when it comes to using TPEs, I don't know enough details about Bogdan or Gordon's new contract to know if any of them apply. Are you suggesting a simultaneous or non simultaneous trade? I think the challenge would be convincing all the parties that it would be in their best interest.

As for the 2nd question, if you used $10m of the exception on Tristan rather than the MLE and $20m on Bogdan, aren't you right where you started when it comes to luxury tax?
Any odd typos are because I suck at typing on an iPhone :D

If we get a trade exception from Char that would be fantastic. I like smart as a sixth man anyway.

Kemba 30/Teague 18/Waters
BogBog 20/Smart 28/Langford
Brown 32/BogBog 8/Nesmith 8
Tatum 32/GWill 16
Thompson 28/Theis 20/RW3

Danny didn't want Turner, neither did I.  We are in good shape at the center position.

Bogdan is 6'6", 6'10" wingspan, who can shoot lights out, and play make.  I think he is an excellent replacement for Hayward. Who else would you want that is available?

I’m all for this idea.  We’re going to miss Hayward’s playmaking.  Bogdan averages about 4.5 assists per 36 which is slightly better than Hayward and much better than Tatum and Brown.  He’d fit very well in Hayward’s role.

I’m not sure, but I read we’re about $16 million below the tax line and need to stay under it to honor the Thompson signing.  Sac would need compensation and the Hawks have been rumored to be offering Bogdan 4/72.  If we offer Langford to Sacramento, we’d be able to beat that offer.

We’re gonna be hard-capped at $138.6 million.

Right now, we’re at right around $100 million, not counting FAs or draft picks.  Rookies will make around $7 million I think; free agents around $14 million.

So, we’re at approximately $121 million.  If accurate, we could S&T BB into a hypothetical trade exception, starting his salary at $17.6 million.

There’s potentially a bit more flexibility, as this assumes Teague got the BAE, and Hoopshype may have included Javonte Green’s salary.

We just need to convince Charlotte to do the sign and trade, Sacramento to trade him to us, and Bogdan to sign with us.  The first two are doable.  Convincing Bogdan that this is the best place for him would be the biggest obstacle.

Why not just fit TT in the deal and still have the exception still at our disposal. Tatum is getting max deal, so hard to put too much more money in the future. Maybe use TT money then on someone like Batum.

I'm fine with letting Edwards and Ojeleye go.

Edwards is a bad fit and I'm starting to dislike Ojeleye (let Grant Williams play his role).

We wouldn’t really be able to use the MLE if we went that route due to the hard cap.

If we trade Theis for a future (protected) 1st to a contender we'd create enough space to sign Bogdanovic. Then we sign a center for the vet min to compete with Timelord and Thompson for minutes.

Or just trade Edwards and Ojeleye, and sign Bogdanovic to an ascending contract starting at like $18M a year.
