This is bad.

Did Ainge push too hard with Indy in the Turner talks and demand too much and we end up, instead, with nothing ? Hayward for Turner with smaller pieces fit in was a no-brainer for Celts and Danny blew it. What the hell Ainge, was he too tall to suit you and our choir boy coach ? You two want to play midget-man ball.

According to Spotrac, Charlotte is about $28M over the cap right now when all cap holds are considered.  The only big cap hold they can "waive" away is Biyombo at $25.5M.  All the other holds are small and include the rookies they just drafted.  They list Batum as "player exercised" (I believe he had a PO) so his salary is on the books.

I don't know what the exact numbers will work out to be but this appears to need to be a trade.  That means we get some player or players back and also likely a Trade Exemption.  Maybe we use the TE and trade for Turner, who knows.  This is not the best outcome probably but there are still a number of pieces to fall into place.

At $30M, I am glad we didn't sign him and I suspect that this was too rich for Indy as well.  They would have had to send back at least $24M in players (Turner and McDermott would have worked) as well as overpay for Hayward.  That is not a very good deal for Indy
They are waiving Batum and stretching his 27M salary over 3 years.  That frees up 18M space this season.

Well this is a disaster. Look In not sure I'd go as far as saying Ainge should be fired, he's a good GM, but in the last couple of years he's

Traded a top 10 pick for Irving
Lost irving for nothing
Lost Horford for nothing
Lost Hayward (return pending)
Let guys like Rozier, Morris go for nothing
Failed to move up in the draft.
Even the saving grace of last year has questions about his Knee.

I mean the Celtics future is now 100% Brown/Tatum, and there are worse places to be. But there will be no cap space for the rest of Kemba's contract. There are no more surplus draft picks left to make. The fate of the team basically relies on the young guys on roster improving enough to A) make the team a contender or B) be flipped for another star. That's it. Theres now a ton riding on Langford, Nesmith, and the Williams'.

I feel like a lot of this really unfair.

- the top 10 pick was a good gamble for a chance at Irving
- Irving was a mutual departure and there was likely nothing we were going to do to stop him from signing at home anyways
- Horford and Hayward are two awful contracts; you really wanting Danny to pay them??

Some of the draft stuff is fair, but again it also takes two parties to tango.

The more reasonable view is that this is actually a product of Danny's success in gathering four max-level players at the same time via both free agency and the draft. Just untenable to keep all of them on big contracts at one time.

I concede these are fair points, any given transaction can be explained away as "bad luck" or "well he signed those guys in the first place." Doesnt really change the fact the celtics have gone from a team with all avenues open to heavily dependent on player development. The c's situation has worsened considerably.

Like I get that these are crazy contracts, but in that case if you think a guy is gonna sign somewhere else trade him at the deadline. The c's didn't because they thought they were competitors. And that's the c's original sin, they tried to straddle two different timelines.

Bring on the signing of the scrapheap bottom of the barrel unrestricted free agent. Aron Baynes is on line  one

Baynes is NOT a bottom barrel scrapheap player.

all of baynes friends from that celtics team are gone now.  he isn't coming back here.

He may be more open to it now that Tommy is not reporting on watching him in the shower

Wonder how much pleasure Jordan gets stealing Celtic FA year after we stole Kemba from him?

Jordan is a competitive guy, and that has to factor into this, particularly since he was willing to pay Hayward above market value.

I hope Hayward enjoys that money because he will be miserable losing a lot and never making the playoffs.  For me this is telling that money will always talk over everything else.  He collected a lot from Boston and gave very little back because if freak injuries.  This last piece of the saga shows who Hayward really is.  Bye felicia.

Sure looks like Ainge overplayed his hand here.

What if charlotte struck out on another guy and decided to go for Hayward because of it? Deal should have been done yesterday with Indy.

It’s just infuriating

Again all speculation but this deal came out of nowhere when many blue check marks were heavily reporting on a sign and trade up until an hour ago with Indy

also,  why not get it done in the two days they extended the deadline.  hayward may have taken the deal from indy without going to the market.

Can you imagine for a second that you are GH and his agent.  Do you think they are ignorant or do you suspect they are actively engaged as "FREE" agents to explore their best possible return?  Do you think it's in the realm of possibility that once GH and agent know the ballpark of the Indy deal that they are out there actively seeking who else might be willing to offer more?  It is unfathomable to me that Gordon's agent hasn't been in touch with Charlotte from the get go.  If he wasn't then he's not doing his job.   If agent lets GH sign with Indy before doing due diligence, HE should be fired.

obviously.  but you don't know if this was just money either.   it's just as possible if ainge was aggressive in getting a deal in place from indiana in those two days,  hayward would have been willing to take less money to go home as was reported by every reputable reporter we've seen.

Oh nos, we’re doomed!  We lost the guy who barely played the last three seasons!!!

Precisely. I mean, he was a no show for all our playoff runs too. It's not like our guys aren't used to him not being around.

I think its moreso the fact that we lost another asset without recouping any value. The premium draft picks are gone, we're going to be capped out soon, and there's really no way to go from Eastern Conference finalist to champion. Yes, the Jays will improve, but we still have to build around them.
