This is bad.

Did Ainge push too hard with Indy in the Turner talks and demand too much and we end up, instead, with nothing ? Hayward for Turner with smaller pieces fit in was a no-brainer for Celts and Danny blew it. What the hell Ainge, was he too tall to suit you and our choir boy coach ? You two want to play midget-man ball.

This has nothing to do with Ainge. Hayward took the most money he could. Full stop.

According to Spotrac, Charlotte is about $28M over the cap right now when all cap holds are considered.  The only big cap hold they can "waive" away is Biyombo at $25.5M.  All the other holds are small and include the rookies they just drafted.  They list Batum as "player exercised" (I believe he had a PO) so his salary is on the books.

I don't know what the exact numbers will work out to be but this appears to need to be a trade.  That means we get some player or players back and also likely a Trade Exemption.  Maybe we use the TE and trade for Turner, who knows.  This is not the best outcome probably but there are still a number of pieces to fall into place.

At $30M, I am glad we didn't sign him and I suspect that this was too rich for Indy as well.  They would have had to send back at least $24M in players (Turner and McDermott would have worked) as well as overpay for Hayward.  That is not a very good deal for Indy
They are waiving Batum and stretching his 27M salary over 3 years.  That frees up 18M space this season.

One crap contract to another.

Yeah, injured older Hayward got as much cash as young uninjured Hayward.

Oh nos, we’re doomed!  We lost the guy who barely played the last three seasons!!!

Precisely. I mean, he was a no show for all our playoff runs too. It's not like our guys aren't used to him not being around.

I think its moreso the fact that we lost another asset without recouping any value. The premium draft picks are gone, we're going to be capped out soon, and there's really no way to go from Eastern Conference finalist to champion. Yes, the Jays will improve, but we still have to build around them.

Good thing they've started then.

Maybe. Or maybe Ainge didn't want to take IND's offer, dared Hayward to find a better deal then the c'swere offering, and he did.

Or maybe Hayward and IND had essentially agreed but BOS waited too long trying to squeeze IND and allowed CHA to jump in.

Who knows

Danny is a great drafter, but a great trader he is not. He is just too picky, and waits too long. He's done that before and come up empty.

He was better off making a deal with Indy, and maybe getting something in return and having more options before the market dried up.

Now, he's in a position where he gets nothing and the market has been pretty well picked clean--especially bigs.

OK. He got his shooters in the draft, but he has no defense in the paint against the best bigs on the contending teams. Not unless Tacko or Williams suddenly emerges as the next Bill Russell--under the good graces of the coach.

Oh my Lord, people, no. Do people not understand that Hayward opted out and had to agree on any S&T deal? Likely Boston and Indy would've agreed on a deal, but it doesn't matter because Charlotte threw the big offer at him and he decided to prioritize the money over the setting he wanted and being on a competitive team.

Doesn't matter what Danny or Indy did or did not do; it looks like Hayward took it out of their hands and said give me $120 Million over 4 years GUARANTEED or I'm going to Charlotte. And both teams wisely said thanks but no thanks.

That is the definition of incompetence.

So they not only overpaid him, but are shooting themselves in the foot to do so.

If you don't like that, you don't like Hornets basketball
I'm bitter.

The one thing that we know for sure here is that Hayward seems comfortable playing for one of the worst organizations and professional sports.

Welp, there goes the S&T route. Can't believe that Gordy won't even insist on them doing a S&T to give us a trade exception to give us that flexibility.

Batum picked up option at $27M so to "waive" him means to stretch him.  The stretch still counts against the cap I believe.  I still say this will be a trade, we will take some players and salary back and we will get a good sized TPE.

I think Batum can be stretched over max 3 years so that leaves $9M on the books.  By my count, that still leaves them about $10M over the cap, which is the value that the reports have been throwing out.

This is true.  Missed all of 2017-18 playoffs, played in 2018-19 but was still a shell of himself, and played in 5 (not particularly well) of C's 17 playoff games in 2019-20.    So what fans were hoping for is a season of healthy Hayward that has not yet happened.  Could have been great, but in large part what the C's have accomplished in the last 3 years was not due to Hayward.

Plan B?

There were reports years ago that Ainge loves Millsap.  I watched him in the playoffs a little bit this year and he didn't look great though.

Hahaha! My thoughts exactly. Though I would have added a dripping sarcasm emoji because some on here might think it serious...
