But how?

Hawks do not have salary matching capability unless it includes Capela, Dedmon...

They have a ton of cap space. If they absorbed Hayward's salary, it would return a 30 million dollar trade exception to the Cs, allowing them to trade for another player without that player's salary counting against their cap this season (Steven Adams?). On top of that, it would move us far enough away from the luxury tax to give us the full MLE and pursue a better rotation player.

I don't think we want to take a bunch of salary back unless it is a good rotation player.

Thanks. I have never got a great grasp of the trade exception mechanism

So only if a team is way under the cap, can a trade exception (the example you provided with Hayward going to the Hawks) workout

But how did the GSW obtain one.  Weren't they over the cap?

- A trade exception also has an expiry date. And can only work via trade ..... right?

I guess its better than losing Hayward for nothing.  But at the end of the day, nothing could come out of it

Is it possible the extension of the deadline is not to allow the Celtics to facilitate a trade (Hayward doing us a solid) but rather the Celtics Doing Hayward a solid and allowing him to openly talk about his fair market value should he be willing to sign elsewhere?

What if this is just a business courtesy and after seeking his fair market value, he circles back and allows us to match any offer and we see him opt out and then resign a negotiated deal with Celtics (4 year, $100m range)?

I don’t see it.  His wife hates Boston.  He has to leave.

naw. He won't waste the 34 million option.  Its the last time he could see such money.

If he has strong demand from 4 or 5 teams ... and they want Hayward not just for next season but long term.  He and his agent, can capitalize on this player option, plus mid season lineup a nice extension.   Just suck in/optimize as much money as possible

He is a goner. He went from top priority. To bad luck injury and 2nd fiddle behind Tatum, Brown, Kemba

But he is not going to give up his money.

These players are businessman now after all

Hopefully I got it right.

The Celtics can get a trade exception if they trade a player to a team under the cap. The Warriors traded Iggy to the Grizzles(?) who were under the cap at that time. That generated a trade exception to the Warriors as part of the deal. It's not really a commodity that teams can trade.

Ok got it. But GSW hasnt done anything yet to utilize this exception. And it will expire soon?

Something to think about... Chicago is a three hour drive or a 45 minute flight from Hayward's home in Fishers, IN.

Sooooooo, perhaps Hayward to Chicago works for Gordon and the Celtics. There has been a rumor about Chicago talking to Boston on Kemba. Could they have been talking to Chicago about Hayward?

Seems the trades Danny makes are never the ones that are rumored and proposed all over the place, so simple even bloggers could do them. His trades seem to come out of left field. Hayward to Chicago sure seems like a left field to me.

It also might make sense as to why they pushed back the deal until after the draft, because the deal is contingent on a certain player being available at 4, a pick that would be sent Boston's way in the trade.

Oh yeah.... Danny would love nothing more than Okongwu at 4...another undersized big.

I am a huge backer of the "out of left field" trades being the only ones Danny ever makes.  As long as nobody's talking about it -- like Hayward to Chicago -- and it makes some kind of sense, then I think it could be a possibility.

The #4 overall pick seems a steep price for Hayward (or maybe not?) and the Bulls are over the cap.  What do you think the full deal is?  Would love if we could get Carter Jr in the deal, but probably not.

Hayward + 14 + 26 + 30 for Otto Porter Jr + #4?  I'd take WCJ instead of #4 if possible.

Tyler Herro said on Instagram Live he thought he was going to Boston in the draft. "I got blessed to come here instead of there."

Man, Nba guys seem to really hate the city of Boston.
