Big thing is it looks like they won’t lose him for nothing.

I think this extension  is beneficial to both parties but more Hayward.  He is trying to get his cake and eat it too, meaning he wants the $34.2M for next season and he wants to be able to play where he wants to play (which apparently isn't Boston).  This extension leaves more time for that scenario to work out.  There is probably something more than nothing in the works or they wouldn't bother.

If he opts out, they can still do a sign and trade based on a new contract.  For Hayward, that will be at a much lower contract value for next season probably but the Celtics can still get something back (maybe even a better deal with Hayward on a more team friendly contract) and Hayward still gets to play where he wants to play, where ever that is (albeit at a lower salary for next season).  In the immortal words of Meatloaf, 2 out of 3 ain't bad (for Hayward that is).

My take:

Hayward has threatened to opt out and sign with a bad team with cap space (ATL or NYK) unless Danny can trade him to a team he is happy with, in which case he will opt in, or work out a long term deal. The extra time benefits both sides: The Celtics have more time to put together a deal and/even select player(s) in draft that could be part of the trade; and Hayward benefits because more teams will have possibly freed up cap space to make an offer to him as an UFA, since the FA dominoes are already falling despite the Friday start date (remember last season FA).

Danny is now scouring to strike the best possible return for the Celtics from a team that Gordon is comfortable playing with.

Most obvious: Pacers

Dark horse:  I think the Warriors. I just don't think they want the picks. They are invested in winning now. Hayward would really fit in well there.  This is where we may have to take back or redirect Wiggins, and swap 14 for 2.

Who else do you see us trading GH to that GH would be okay with?  The Clippers (for PG)?

Idea:

Hayward S&T to Indiana for TJ Warren and Doug McDermott.

Could start Hayward at ~$22.5 million

I guess Hayward wont be bringing back up upgraded draft pick then.

Unless the 1% chance thatvsomeone drafts a player for us.

SG: Reggie Miller / Jeff Hornacek / Nick Anderson
SF: George Gervin / George McGinnis / Kyle Korver

One reason for holding off on a trade is the restriction on trading 1st round picks in consecutive years.  Danny typically makes the trade after the pick is made to allow the team more flexibility to trade next years pick.

If hayward threatened to opt out unless team traded him to only where he wants to go then let him opt out.

See ya.

Lets see how he like playing in new york or atlanta competing for 9th place in the east.

It sure is, but what leverage does the team have?

If the alternative is that he walks, there's not much you can do.

If the alternative is that he stays for one season and then walks, you can weight the value of one season of Hayward against getting multiple lesser assets.  If you can get guys under contract for more than just this upcoming season, I think it's worth it.

There will likely be no see ya. The team didn't consent to moving the deadline to after the draft for no reason. Something is going to happen.

There is a possibility that the team is attempting to do something that, if successful, would make him want to stay that doesn't include him, but the likelihood is he's getting traded.

I really hope Hayward stays, but we are in the drivers seat here I would think if we work out a sign and trade with several teams competing for his services.  If the Pelicans got that deal for an expiring Holiday who knows what we could get from the receiving team having Hayward signed to a longer deal.
