Just a reminder that we’re doing two rounds tonight, as we’ll be doing 15 rounds overall :)
Sounds great!

What about the coach round? Will we draft a coach after the 15th round?
Not too sure just yet, I reckon we properly discuss all the merits of a coach round over the course of the weekend, and take a break from drafting. Gives everyone a chance to choose specific seasons for players and whatnot too!

Man, with 4 more rounds, I'm gonna have to dig deeper and find some more players. My draft board is a bit barren, at the moment.

Mine too, I think I have enough there to cover at least 2 picks, but I think I will really start to look at needs from here on out.

I got plenty of binkies that are still available on the board! I see at least 12 guys I'd be happy to have on my team! 8)

Obviously, most of them are role players.

There are a couple guys left I have on my board since the 5th and 6rth round. Expect them to go soon, but if 1 lasts until my second pick today I will be pretty stoked.

might as well start for the day.  not much time between picks so getting going early is never a bad thing.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

With their next pick in the draft the Spurs are going to dip into the center pool again (seeing how it is thinning out pretty quickly).

Going with a player that we know can play in the modern game, give 15.5ppg, 10.5rpg, 3.5apg, 1spg and 1.5bpg with strong screens and good defense.

The spurs select

Jusuf Nurkic

Nice! Best Center available on the board imo.

Yeah, Center list is getting pretty thin now, but I like hius fit on my team.

Ibaka has my small ball center spot locked up.
Capela is my high motor defender that can run with my guns
Laimbeer is my tough guy to push back against any of the bruising centers
Nurkic give me a bit of all of them.

I like Nurkic.  Still some other very good centers available though, not sure how thin the position is though he is probably the best one that was available.

I guess it depends on what you want.

If you want defense and no offense there are some left for sure.
Hustle guys there too.

For me, I feel like potential 2 way centers are getting pretty thin.

Indiana welcomes PF-C Theo Ratliff

During his All-Star season he averaged 12 pts, nearly 4 blocks and 8 rebs.

He gives us a long, athletic shot blocker and rim runner at 6'10".

Trade

The Washington Wizards and the Milwaukee Bucks have agreed on a trade.

Wizards in: Allan Houston
Bucks in: Donovan Mitchell

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I plan to embrace the modern format of 4 positions: Ball handlers, Wings, Swings and Bigs. Mitchell played 47% of his minutes at PG last season and 53% at SG. I'll be using him as a score-first ball handler.

Felt like I needed a dynamic ball handler who could change the pace of the game and explode on the open court. Mitchell fits the bill. I can surround him with 4 shooters and let him do his job. He gives me a different option compared to DJ and Harper who are defensive minded ball handlers.

The Jazz were using Mitchell as a score-first PG in the playoffs. He had a terrific series against the Nuggets averaging 36.3 points, 5 rebounds and 4.9 assists on 52.9% from the floor and 51.6% from 3pt range! He was simply amazing during that series! Unfortunately for the Jazz, they lost in 7 games to the Nuggets.

Ball handlers: Dennis Johnson, Donovan Mitchell, Derek Harper
Wings: Kawhi Leonard, Khris Middleton, Mike Finley
Swings: Pascal Siakam, Toni Kukoc
Bigs: Nikola Jokic, Nikola Vucevic

With the 3d pick of the 12th round, the Milwaukee Bucks select Cedric Maxwell.

  • 2-time NBA champion
  • 1981 Finals MVP (over Larry Legend)
  • Most efficient scorer in the league for 2 straight seasons. Led the league in eFG% in 1978/79 and 1979/80 while averaging 19 and 16.9 points per game respectively.
  • No. 31 retired by Boston Celtics

Never expected to land an all-time great Celtic in the 12th round tbh! According to the advanced stats, he's the 13th/14th best SF in the draft. To put it another way, he's a borderline starter, especially since some of the guys listed below were primarily playing at SG.

Value Over Replacement Player (career high in a single season)
1. Kawhi 7.1
2. Dr J 6.9
3. Jimmy Butler 6.6
4. Paul Pressey 5.3 (played mostly at SG)
5. Alex English 5.0
6. George Gervin 4.9 (played mostly at SG)
6. Peja 4.9
8. Danny Granger 4.2 (although he played just 67 games that season)
9. Rashard Lewis 4.1
10. Dan Majerle 4.0 (played mostly at SG)
11. Richard Jefferson 3.9
12. Kiki Vandeweghe 3.9 (imo, at his best when playing at PF)
13. Cedric Maxwell 3.8

Box Plus/Minus (career high in a single season)
1. Kawhi 9.4
2. Dr J 7.7
3. Jimmy Butler 7.3
4. Paul Pressey 5.7 (played mostly at SG)
5. George Gervin 4.8 (played mostly at SG)
5. Danny Granger 4.8 (again, he played just 67 games that season)
7. Alex English 4.6
8. Khris Middleton 4.1
9. Peja 3.9
10. Gerald Wallace 3.7 (had a season with a BPM OF 4.9 but he only played 55 games)
10. Rashard Lewis 3.7 (had a season with a BPM of 4.1 but he only played 60 games)
12. Dan Majerle 3.6 (played mostly at SG)
12. Kiki Vandeweghe 3.6 (imo, at his best when playing at PF)
14. Cedric Maxwell 3.5

Obviously, these are just raw numbers. Take em with a grain of salt. For instance, I don't think Paul Pressey is the 4th best SF in the draft. It's just an indication of how good some of these guys are/were. I guess Pressey was an elite defender. I've never watched him play. Not even in youtube videos.

I think this was a trade that worked well for both of us. With Rondo leading my second unit, it made more sense to have an extra shooter in Houston instead of Mitchell.
