  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I think he is opting out because he (and his family) want out of Boston.
Maybe he doesn't have much hope in himself to earn a great contract after next season and would rather cash out of 34 mil next year to get 4 years 25mil elsewhere.

'Elsewhere' would more than likely require a s&t, which I would be more than happy with. Don't get me wrong, I would happily keep Hayward in a deal w/ a slightly smaller AAV, but if Hayward just wants out, at least there is a decent chance we aren't left empty handed.

Honestly, one of the worst scenarios for us was Hayward simply opting into the $34M this season. If this report is true, at least we will be able to figure out our options and have more future certainty.

If he Opts out, and is a free agent why would it require a sign & trade?

If they really are going to be holding a lot more money in escrow this year, then that makes sense. The $34 million cap number is a bit of a lie if basketball related income drops significantly.

This probably also means he'd be looking for a back-loaded deal, which could be good for us this year, but not long term (since year to year salary raises/drops are limited to 8% of the first-year value)

Good point. I think it will depend on how they structure the escrow. If they spread the COVID losses over several seasons rather than this coming, which is what the PA wants, then less likely Hayward opts out. Right?

Maybe? That might just push him into a long, back-loaded deal though (in the hopes that they aren't still covering for COVID losses by the end of the deal).

And the uncertainty of how things will shake out might just push him to go for the long term deal anyway. There are already plenty of reasons to go for a longer term deal, and the possibility of escrow this year might just push it over the edge.
I'm bitter.

Is Hayward's option decision due before or after draft day? Anyone know yet ?

I don't think a date has been established yet unless something has come up in the past few days.

Few teams (and no good ones except the Heat, who many expect to avoid long term money to chase a star in 2021) are expected to have cap space. That leaves Hayward's non-S&T options as teams like the Hawks and Knicks
I'm bitter.

Plus you notice the claim is out of his deal not out of Boston. I promise the headlines are very eager for such big news to happen.

Do you have any particular reason why his family wants out of Boston?  His family after all chose to come here a few years back.

I'll root for him on his next team, wherever that ends up being.  Just never really came together for him in Boston.

The Celts will be fine without him on the roster just like they were fine with him on the roster but largely unable to perform.

Just get the sense that his wife has been annoyed on multiple occasions dealing with the Boston fan base via social media. Other than that just an assumption.

If Hayward does opt out, it gives the Celtics the full MLE (9.2 million) instead of the current mini MLE (5.7 miilion) that they currently possess. That gives them much more flexibilty to find a effective acquisition.

Yes, but I’d much rather have Hayward + T-MLE than just the MLE.

So we ll have 4mil more to improve the team and cover GH's production... Good luck with that

no, only 3 1/2 million. I was just trying to find something positive about it.

Who are the multiple sources?

Thread title should be changed. Rusillo says he's heard Hayward "wants out" but doesn't offer much more than speculation that he will opt out.
