I think Kemba's offensive contribution could be replaced by more minutes from Smart and whatever other player we would get back in a trade.

Substituting Kemba’s offense with Smart’s would seem to be a pretty significant downgrade, no?  Especially with Hayward’s future here in doubt, I don’t think it makes sense to downgrade our offense.

Please allow me to go full on crazy.

How about this? And I know the salaries don't match, but let's pretend that this is the core trade, and the add ons will be filled later.

To Indiana:
Gordon Hayward, Kemba Walker

To Boston:
Malcolm Brogdon, Domantas Sabonis

Who says no?

So the team would be:

G: Brogdon
G: Smart
F: Jaylen
F: Tatum
C: Sabonis

That doesn't fill me with confidence to be honest.

I believe both Brogdon and Sabonis have seen their stat lines boosted by playing in a so-so Indiana Pacers offense that allowed them to do as much as whatever they want to do whenever they want to do it. Both players would see a drop off in another environment.

I see a lot of guys who are good but not great at things (especially at creating out on the perimeter) who can be duplicative of each other leading to diminished returns.

So better individually than they are collectively.

-----------------

I prefer the balance offered by Kemba and Hayward. I believe it is superior. Kemba's quickness and ball-handling offering a different dimension to the offense. Hayward as a more proven 4th option than Brogdon whose offensive influence was far less in Milwaukee when in a more similar there to here than what he showed in Indiana vs here.

----------------

Sabonis did a lot better than I thought he would this season but I am still not fully on board with his game. A big man who can't shoot and struggles on defense is a bad combo. Very good team offense with methodical isolation based individual scoring and strong rebounding.

I wonder how much of his team offense & rebounding can be obtained by a cheaper center who wouldn't cost us so much in a trade. I am still not convinced by Sabonis as a leading player on a top team.

Ultimately, it is probably my lack of certainty / belief in Sabonis that stops me from liking this trade. Others who rate Sabonis higher would probably like this trade more than me.

- The trade would create a $34,479,100 TPE for the C's (=Kemba's contract + $100,000). We could use the exception to acquire a Kemba replacement. We could even use it to sign a free agent as long as his starting salary is less than $34,479,100.

We could only use that exception on free agents if they were acquired via sign-and-trade.  That would in turn hard cap us.

I think I just nailed the Kemba trade:

Nets: Kemba, Thesis, 14th and Milwaukee Pick
Bos: Joe Harris, Dinwiddie, J, Allen

Kemba goes home AND plays for a contender.

Celtics get a shooter, center, and another PG

You can even play around with this trade, Nets have what we need and we have what they could use.

It is a very tough loss, but Kemba didn’t look like he belonged out there. He looked out marched through out the entire playoffs and it was odd to watch because I valued him so high. I literally said going into the playoffs Kemba was our best player and will be the finals MVP.

That is why I think he was hurt. More hurt than we know. That his knee was bothering him more than we realize.

I expect Kemba do do better next season and that (among other reasons (1) the continued improvement of Tatum and Jaylen (2) the ability to improve the depth this offseason that we didn't have last season because of cap issues) is why I believe this team can go further next season and win the title.

The best days are still to come for Kemba in green.

Theis and Allen are about even.

So it’s essentially Kemba plus two picks for a worse PG and a signed-and-traded Joe Harris?

Why not just keep Kemba and Theis and trade for a shooter?

Him not being healthy is fair, but I don’t think his game maximizes the teams capabilities. Regardless I don’t see even a fully healthy Kemba giving us a ring because if he’s not scoring he’s near useless. Plus Brad kind of lets the boys “play” when it comes to offense and I’d rather a different ball handler to resolve that.

I imagine blink has a pretty significant player coming back in a trade with Kemba, not just subtracting his production from our team w/ no replacement.

But, let's be clear here - if Danny is looking to move on from Kemba, it will be next offseason, not this one. And that is not a bad place to be - we will still be a very good team this year w/ him on the team. Hopefully Brad can get a little more creative on how to handle the defensive switches - because it was pretty brutal watching guys like Lowry and Butler take him to school 1 on 1 w/ no contingency plan. I don't really fault Kemba for this - he put in an admirable effort.

Theis and Allen are absolutely not even, so I’m not sure what you mean about that. How much worse is Dinwiddie than Kemba? I think you may be underestimating dinwiddie, but he’s a differnt kind of PG. He is more of a playmaker than Kemba for sure and I’m positive his personality will mix well with the team.

I honestly don’t see the way Kemba plays taking us to the next level. Dinwiddie is still developing but he’s a pretty good player and NOT a liability on defense.

There are 2 sides of the course and Kemba got exposed for Not being able to play either side in the playoffs.

They get a another starter whose contract is solidified and they know for sure wants to play hard for their team.  Kemba also bolsters their offense and giving them a 3rd All-Star. Kemba will also be around 2 NBA Champions, there is no telling what could turn out for his career.

Are you telling me a lineup of Kemba, Kyrie, LeVert,Durant, Theis/Jordan isn’t an intriguing line up?

Hell even:
Kemba
Kyrie
Durant
Theis
Jordan
6th LeVert

That’s a nice line up stop playing with me man lol.

Talk about selling both prematurely and low.  Not happenin'.

Kemba's locker room presence seems underappreciated here.  He willingly took a back seat to Tatum and Brown in these playoffs - which seemed like the right decision - and they've hardly had any time to develop chemistry yet.

Are you sure you are selling low?  I actually think you may be selling high, or at least the high side of middle.

I do agree that it is unlikely being in only his second season of the contract but would not go as for as "not happening".  It all just depends on who you get back.

They need somebody to play when Kyrie sits out another season.

Theis and Allen are absolutely not even, so I’m not sure what you mean about that.

Their production is very similar, except that Allen has no game outside of three feet from the basket.  Allen is a bit better at rebounding, but that’s probably because Theis stretches the floor more.
