Really, really good late summer content. Keep it coming.

It's not like I'm gonna start watching baseball instead.

I'm actually shocked, but I do think this was a shot at JB (with plausible deniability). I thought all the stuff between them was overblown. Now, I'm not so sure. He just happened to use the exact language that was rumored about Jaylen right as he was being traded? The exact talking point about Jaylen's personality that was heavily examined (supported/criticized) by everyone a few weeks ago?

I guess you could talk me into the idea that Jayson was just reflecting on his own strengths and weaknesses as a leader and comparing it to another trait he's noticed among people in leadership positions. But I don't think he did it without realizing people were going to think of JB when he said it.

Being a leader doesn't mean you know it all, right? I don't know it all," Tatum said. "I'll be the first person to say that. Being a leader is being comfortable with raising your hand like, I don't know. Can you explain that to me? I don't know X, Y, and Z. I want to learn. Being around somebody that feels like they know it all, I don't want to be around that person. I don't want to be the smartest person in the room. I want to learn from somebody else.

Certainly sounds like he's talking about JB...

Maybe. But what comes through most to me from the post is that JT may not be the kind of leader the Celtics need. I love the guy and am 100% on board with him being a learner. But being a leader for this team I do think requires a very high confidence level and an ability to have answers not just questions. JB may have been delusional but his self-assuredness may well have been a positive when leading the young Celtics players last season.

I also think that JT doesn't have the leadership traits that the Cs need. He is soft and doesn't exude confidence, unlike Bird, Garnett or Pierce. He's offensive game is lazy too and in the last 2 or 3  years he hasn't been clutch.  If not for Brown's superb game in 2024 the Cs wouldn't have gotten the trophy (don't remind me of JT's flaky postgame celebration).

People wants him to be the leader of the Cs, but for  me it's just like forcing a square peg into a round hole.

Tatum averaged 30ppg for an entire season and is regularly making All-NBA first team, but you think he is soft and lacks confidence?  ???

Not all leaders are loud and boisterous. I think Jrue Holiday is a perfect example of this.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

this.

I think we're going to see this part of Tatum exposed this season without JB here to push this team.   Tatum will give it his all (whether people like what his 'all' is will be a different issue --> barrage of iso, step-back 3's anyone?) but he's not a vocal, fiery or inspirational leader.  whether anyone else steps into that role remains to be seen but the supporting cast lacks the gravitas at this point to have any fire/leadership moves given any weight.

I think this will be Tatum's evolution this year.  This is 100% his team and he will be the driving force behind their success.  This team will always play hard with Joe as the coach but Tatum will be the calming voice in the locker room.  I'm not sure what kind of person PG13 is but I imagine he and Conley will be leaders as well.  That's probably one of the reasons why Conley was signed.  To fill the leadership vacuum left from the trade of JB.

Look at the context with which the speech was given: it was a youth camp

Sounds like a great thing to tell the youth who still have a long way to go, especially in terms of learning and developing their skills. If JT, an established NBA superstar, is still learning? Then they have no excuse to think they know it all

This wasnt about JB. Heck, it might not have even been about JT. This was about inspiring the kids and teaching them about having the right attitude.

Exactly this.  TP.  One of the worst parts of the Information Age is people assuming that quotes posted to the internet were intended for the whole world to see, as opposed to actually being said to the people in the room at the time for a specific purpose.

I think that this is absolutely correct. And, the funny thing is, if this really was a "shot", it would show that JT is a terrible leader.  Leaders don't make vague criticisms about former teammates and start public spats.

Yep. Sometimes we see videos and put ourselves in its context without realizing the whole reason we are seeing the video is because we are part of a different context.

I was thinking of recent Celtics players, but Timmy is a great example as well.

A lot of people can see Tatum regularly  getting tight and nervous in crunch time.  He does lack confidence.
