Because he loves letting players “figure it out” themselves. Even though they usually don’t.

Just like he doesn’t ride the hot hand, he always lets the cold players try and warm themselves up

That should have been an and-1 for Smart.  THey call a ticky tack foul for Sabonis just a few minutes earlier that looked similar.
