Why is it gross, he got salary dumped to a lottery team and negotiated that he'd be traded or bought out. Pretty straightforward, the fact that Memphis surprised themselves by getting decent quickly shouldn't remove the agreement he had with the team preseason.

I never read report that Memphis said they would buy him out if they did not trade him.  They've been pretty consistent that they wouldn't do that.

There is something petulant about a guy who can still play at a high level, who is healthy, making $10mm, saying he won't play for them.

They agreed he would never have to report to the team. That's usually code that a buy out will happen after the trade deadline.

Memphis consistently has said they will find a trade for him and not buy him out to generate trade leverage. I am skeptical they told Andre they'd never buy him out.

Anyways there is something gross about players being traded to separate companies across the country, but that's sports! Memphis could have easily opted to play hardball and demand he report and chose not to, once they did that they gave up that avenue of complaining.

I get why all sides are proceeding as they are, there are no bad guys here. Even the Memphis kids feeling themselves and shouting at Iggy is fine.

I think AI is clearly in the wrong in. Don't want to play in MEM then fine, but in that case they shouldn't have to pay you. You signed a contract, respect that contract. A team is in no way obligated to make sure you live/work where you want to. That may be harsh, and it may not be the norm for employment but then again neither is making 10 million a year.

Don't get me wrong, Im not really shedding tears for billionaires owners or millionaire athletes but as far as I can tell only one side has refused to uphold their end of the contract signed.

If Memphis wanted to fine him for not playing they were free to do that, they chose not to. They could not pay him and prevent him from becoming a FA if he didn't report without their permission.

Not sure if this has already been posted, but Mannix says the Celtics are interested in Bertans. I imagine the price would be fairly steep, though.

My hope is Robert Williams and Poirier.  I’d add in the Brooklyn 2nd if absolutely necessary, but I think Rob should be enough.

I wouldn't give up Robert Williams for a rental.

I am happy to give up for a player that will be here for a few years but not for guy that will only be here a few months.

Robert Williams is too valuable to lose - even as a role player level prospect - for a rental player.

Rob wasn’t part of the core rotation even when healthy.  It’s tough to see him getting any closer to it having missed two months.  He needs reps, but Stevens can’t afford to give him reps at this point in the season.

His value will only decline over time — it’s going to be lower over the summer than it is today.  Best to give him a fresh start now and get a useful rental.  And nothing is stopping us from resigning Bertans in the off-season or acquiring something via a sign-and-trade — we’d have his full Bird rights.

You do you, Iggy. Get what you can and screw those that don't like it. They'd be doing the exact same thing if they had the leverage to. But they don't, and instead sit behind their computer, living their miserable lives, complaining about your life. Go ahead Iggy, eat your cake while they eat poop.

Rob Williams isn't in the rotation but he showed enough to show he is good enough / or close to being good enough to be a rotation caliber player. A young player that is already there, has upside to improve further (tightening defensive rotations) and become something considerably more down in the line ...

Is too valuable to give up for a rental.

Same with Rozier and Ibaka a few years now.

Now, if you want to give up someone like Tremont Waters for Bertans or a mid to low value 2nd round pick (40-60 range, not 30-40 range) for a rental like Bertans -- I'm all in for that. That is low cost.

Rob Williams is more like medium cost (for netting a role player in return). You don't want to lose cost effective role players with upside whose rights you can control (restricted free agency) for someone who will likely walk in 4 months time.

There is too much talent there. Both proven (current ability) and unproven (upside).

------------------------------

These are the sorts of moves that teams look back on in a few years time and question why (1) they had to overpay some veteran bench player who is now worse than the young guy they had on their books a few years earlier (2) they lack quality cheap young talent on their roster.

By trading away solid young players for rentals.

------------------------

I am really anti-rentals in general.

I am happy to trade for / to give up assets for ... players who have contracts that will last a few years.

Yeah I got no problem with what Iggy is doing either.

I think Memphis is flat out stupid for paying him while he is not playing though. That is their fault though. Not Iggy's.

No play, no pay.

Per Woj:

ESPN Sources: Minnesota orchestrating three-team trade talks with Houston and Atlanta -- with hopes of ultimately turning discussions into a four-way deal that brings Golden State G D'Angelo Russell to Timberwolves.

The Timberwolves, Rockets and Hawks possess the assets to fulfill some of each team's goals: forward Robert Covington to Houston, center Clint Capela to the Hawks and potentially two first-round picks and an expiring contract to Minnesota, league sources said.

You would think GSW would just want Covington, they need some decent SF type guys to compete next year. But If you can trade D-rus  for 2 first round picks and Dieng's contract (which has 1 year left after this one) then GSW could go into the offseason with their own likely top 5 pick, 2 other first round picks, Diengs contract for salary matching and the AI trade exception. That could allow them a lot of room rework their roster.

Covington and Capela to GSW would be a pretty good return for Russell. Probably about as good a return for role player level talent as GSW could hope to achieve for a quasi-star like Russell.

PG: Steph Curry
SG: Klay Thompson
SF: Rob Covington
PF: Draymond Green
 C: Clint Capela

That is a solid starting five. Well balanced. Covington's shooting is a great fit. Capela just a better version of what they have had the last couple of years at center. Not ideal (since he cannot pass or shoot) but better than what they had.

Plus Capela's plantar fascitis is no issue since GSW are not competing for anything this year anyway. They'll be happy to sit him out and collect a better draft pick.

Minnesota should try for that instead of trying to send Capela to Atlanta.

That's not the trade. The Rockets would be getting Covington in that framework. Otherwise, the Rockets aren't trading away Capela.
