Not sure if this has already been posted, but Mannix says the Celtics are interested in Bertans. I imagine the price would be fairly steep, though.
My hope is Robert Williams and Poirier. I’d add in the Brooklyn 2nd if absolutely necessary, but I think Rob should be enough.
I wouldn't give up Robert Williams for a rental.
I am happy to give up for a player that will be here for a few years but not for guy that will only be here a few months.
Robert Williams is too valuable to lose - even as a role player level prospect - for a rental player.
Rob wasn’t part of the core rotation even when healthy. It’s tough to see him getting any closer to it having missed two months. He needs reps, but Stevens can’t afford to give him reps at this point in the season.
His value will only decline over time — it’s going to be lower over the summer than it is today. Best to give him a fresh start now and get a useful rental. And nothing is stopping us from resigning Bertans in the off-season or acquiring something via a sign-and-trade — we’d have his full Bird rights.
Rob Williams isn't in the rotation but he showed enough to show he is good enough / or close to being good enough to be a rotation caliber player. A young player that is already there, has upside to improve further (tightening defensive rotations) and become something considerably more down in the line ...
Is too valuable to give up for a rental.
Same with Rozier and Ibaka a few years now.
Now, if you want to give up someone like Tremont Waters for Bertans or a mid to low value 2nd round pick (40-60 range, not 30-40 range) for a rental like Bertans -- I'm all in for that. That is low cost.
Rob Williams is more like medium cost (for netting a role player in return). You don't want to lose cost effective role players with upside whose rights you can control (restricted free agency) for someone who will likely walk in 4 months time.
There is too much talent there. Both proven (current ability) and unproven (upside).

These are the sorts of moves that teams look back on in a few years time and question why (1) they had to overpay some veteran bench player who is now worse than the young guy they had on their books a few years earlier (2) they lack quality cheap young talent on their roster.
By trading away solid young players for rentals.

I am really anti-rentals in general.
I am happy to trade for / to give up assets for ... players who have contracts that will last a few years.
