The players make the NBA...the coaches manage it.

But David Stern EXPANDED it.....BIG TIME. Not only the NBA but the WNBA.

Dude came on the scene right in the MIDDLE of the Bird / Magic competition...grabbed that limelight and IMO it exploded from there.....

RIP Sir. Prayers to his family.

I know Stern will get little love from many on this site as he made a few decisions that impacted the Celtics in a very negative way, but I will send out my thoughts and deep condolences to Stern's family and friends.

I was a giant Celtic fan in the 70's and there just wasn't a ton of NBA basketball on television. Channel 4 carried games of the Celtics but not every one and the national networks barely cared about the NBA. Heck, I am pretty sure they were showing the NBA Finals on tape delay back and even into the 80's.

But Stern took over and he, with the help of two guys named Bird and Magic, changed the NBA to what we know it today. First Sunday games happened all the time and you got multiple games, much like the NFL. Then the taped delayed stuff ended. Teams started landing lucrative local televising deals. Games started to be broadcast nationally during weekdays. The league became a global phenomenon.

The three point line, the draft lottery, expanded international influence, the Dream Team, lucrative television deals that expanded NBA exposure and the CBA that ensured players got a major piece of the pie all happened because of David Stern.

David Stern made my love of the Celtics and the NBA more accessible and more enjoyable. For that I thank you David Stern and hope you are resting in peace.

A certain song from the 1930's film ''The Wizard of Oz'' comes to mind. :P

He commercialized basketball both in good and bad way. RIP, regardless.

this was the second thing that popped into my head when I heard the news -- right after thinking how much he expanded the league.  did wonders for the league and basketball in general but royally screwed the C's as a franchise in what certainly seemed a deliberate and unreasonable manner

Won't forget how he rigged 2002 WCF and 2010 NBA Finals Game 7 enabling the Lakers' two more banners.

No RIP from me, too.

The single biggest factor in making the NBA the worldwide sport it is today. Pulled the league out of its darkest period and got it to flourish again, then oversaw the escape from another doldrum period early in the century. Rest in peace commish.

TP Nick. I started watching the NBA around the mid-80s when I was 8 years old, right around the time that Stern really began to make his mark on the league and (with the help of Bird, Magic and then Jordan) set it on the path that led it to being the global powerhouse it is today. Irrespective of how the Celtics were impacted, he certainly left an indelible imprint on the game and left it in a better state than when he entered it. RIP Commish.

My condolences to his loved ones; they are missing David Stern the person, first and foremost.

As for basketball, while I can't (and don't) dismiss what he did for the NBA worldwide, I also don't miss having him as commissioner. I have always believed that Bird and Magic were the ones who truly catapulted the NBA's popularity—Stern made some smart business moves, but he wouldn't have had much to work with without those two.

I also think the way he shafted Boston after Reggie died was uncalled for, and his nurturing of biased officiating (see Jordan's career and the Lakers-Kings playoff series as big examples) was absurd. Thankfully, I can like and follow the Celtics regardless of who's commissioner.
