A lot of people on here were sad that we had to pick smart over exum
I was admittedly one of them.  thought this kid had promise.  then thought he wasn't able to show that promise due to injuries.  I'll go on record on being dead wrong on this one.   was ok with Smart being taken when Exum was off the board but really wanted Exum or Gordon to fall to us.
same here. There was something mysterious about exum that made him seem good at the time

Yeah, like averaging 2.7 points per game in FIBA play and NBA scouts think he's a top 5 pick.
Do scouts and draft gurus that hype these players get to keep their jobs after said players bust out?

Interesting question.

They can always argue that nobody's perfect.

Even now there's absolutely no way to say for sure that Exum was a bad pick where he went.

I've heard in the past that Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins would become the next LeBron, I guess not. Joel Embiid clearly the best player in that draft, followed by Marcus Smart.

Embiid was supposed to be #1 in 2014.
But Embiid had a history of injuries that was considered somewhat career ending or would shorten his NBA career.

That's the only reason why Embiid didn't go #1.

Now, teams must decide if Embiid's issues are chronic. On the surface, the combination of a back and foot problem for a seven-footer are scary. They suggest potential issues to his core, which will affect him for years to come and are extremely difficult to fix.

Weird trade for Cleveland. Thought Exum might have been hitting his stride in '17-'18, but he only played 14 games, and never really recovered from that. Maybe he can get a run going in Cleveland, but I don't see it being too likely.
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

To be fair no one back then could've projected Smart's impact on an NBA team - the early-mid 2010s was the start of the databall era when only a handful of teams recognised the importance of versatile defence as both a man and team defender as well as additive offence.

Wasn’t sure how much I loved the Smart pick at the time but thought that Utah was lucky to be at their draft position. I thought there were 4 terrific prospects in that draft: Wiggins, Parker, Embiid and Exum. I thought Parker would be the least of the 4 and Wiggins would be the best (followed by Embiid and then Exum).

Exum’s career and development has pretty much been derailed by injuries. What could have been? Idk. Maybe the same. Regardless, right now, Exum’s pretty much a bust. I gotta believe that this trade is more about salaries and second round picks, rather than Exum or Clarkson as basketball talents.

Oh I agree that no ranking of potential value draft picks in advance is perfect but how many GMs had players like Exum high on their ranking just because of what the experts say?
How many experts had Exum high because other experts were high on him?

If I recall, the Celtics lost the tiebreaker to Utah.

Not sure how high Ainge was on Exum but may have dodged a bullet by losing that tiebreaker.

Yeah, I was heartbroken when we lost that tie-breaker (we seem to lose a lot of them). There was still an outside hope that Embiid would slip and that extra spot was super-important. I also had assumed that Exum would be gone to Orlando and Gordon would be on the board at #5. It was all about Embiid or Gordon.

During the draft, I remember being shocked by Orlando taking Gordon and all of a sudden the possibility of Exum (a certain top 4 pick) was within our grasp. I didn't know anything about Exum, and had already been getting excited about the idea of Smart in green for weeks, but I agree with others there was a certain mystique about him.

Guys like Fultz, Exum, Darko, and Bender should prove that you need more intel before using a high selection on one of them. Unfortunately, you then have someone like Giannis who throws that idea out the window.

Yeah missing out on Gordon/Exum for Smart turned out to be a blessing.

Gordon is the guy who feels like he should be so much better than he is. Exum obviously is just a clear bust.

Given that no one has a good hit rate (50% or more of picks wash out pretty quickly or disapoint), its hard to fire people for busts. You'd end up with no on left to hire around the league.

Confession: I was very disappointed that we ended up with Smart. I wanted Embiid, whose agent withheld medical info from Utah and Orlando, and figured that if Philly passed out of concern with his back, he’d drop to us. I also was higher on Exum and Gordon than Smart.

I think Gordon turned out to be quite good. Hard to gauge how Exum would have turned out had he not suffered so many injuries.

Would any of us trade Smart for Gordon now, given the chance? Positionally it would make sense. Doubt I would though.

Lots lamented not taking Randle at 6 instead. Glad we didn’t. Just think he lacks BBIQ.
