I remember that Smart vs Randle thread that was on hear for a couple of years that ran out of steam a couple of years ago. This year the difference between players is just so huge. I was on the right side of this one but on the wrong side of Ante Zizic vs Ivica Zubac. Everything is so much clearer in hindsight.

Smart is quickly becoming a symbol of hustle, defense, and toughness throughout the NBA. His all NBA first team defensive award certainly didn't hurt. Sportscasters love to highlight his hustle when ever the Celtics play on the tube.

In a league full of prima donna's Marcus is refreshing.

I like Randle, I wouldn't mind seeing him in Green helping at PF and C.

He's just not Marcus.

While I’ve virtually always favored Smart to Randle, and really don’t think it was close enough to warrant the amount of debate that we had, I also don’t think Randle is going to continue to shoot 5% from 3 this season.  His numbers will tick up and those who only vote based on what they see in the box score will once again pine for Randle.

Randle is grabbing 10.4 rpg and dishing out 4.6 apg.  His shooting has been atrocious, but he is still getting to the line ok and is averaging 13.4 ppg with the lowest shooting of his career.  If he upticks to even his career average, he will add like 4 ppg and then this thread might seem silly the other way.

Smart's assets are, for the most part, intangible (defensive ability, toughness, leadership, play-making). Randle's assets are, for the most part, tangible (scoring ability, rebounds, FG%, length). Smart's strengths are Randle's weaknesses and vice versa.

It's Year 5 and the Smart pick is looking better and better. I'm glad that he's on our team.

It was on brand. I think just about any contending team would prefer Smart to Randle. If you are a non-contender that wants to get some points (like the Knicks), maybe they prefer Randle.

I'm not sure why there is a thread on this now. While I also prefer Smart, this isn't like the Giannis/KO debate which fizzled into thin air by their 3rd year. Randle is a very adept scorer and rebounder and has done several things to add to his game throughout his career (better shooting and passing). It should also be noted that Randle is getting paid substantially more than Smart which should show the market value of each (even if Smart was a FA this past offseason, I highly doubt he gets 3yrs/$62.1M).

Since I believe neither is destined for stardom, I prefer Smart because he is elite in so many categories that don't require high usage; but I can also understand why people might prefer what Randle brings to the table.

I don't think Zubac is much better than Zizic. Even on Cleveland, Zizic is posting up solid backup numbers in limited limits.

Here are some notable players drafted after Smart in the 2014 draft.

Randle (#7)
T. J. Warren (#14)
Nurkic (#16)
Garry Harris (#19)
Clint Capela (#25)
Bogdan Bogdanović (#27)  (he's the one playing for the Kings, imo a very underrated player)
Joe Harris (#33)   (Shooting 54.5% from 3 this season. Obviously, it's a small sample size)
Spencer Dinwiddie (#38)
Jokic (#41)

In a vacuum, which of the above players would you rather have instead of Smart? Jokic is an obvious choice. Anybody else?

Smart vs Randle is a no brained. Smart vs Capela is more interesting but even then I’ll take Smart. If we didn’t have a team loaded at Guard and Wing we would feel a whole lot different about Marcus Smart.

Jokic is the only one whos a "sure" thing, the rets I think there are cases when you might rather have a shooter like Harris or a versatile big like Nurkic but I'm pretty happy with Smart.

I wanted Smart with that pick, but Randle is still a useful player.

It’s the James Young vs. Gary Harris vs. Rodney Hood debate that still bugs me.

Ainge definitely has a history of gambling on draft fallers.  Gerald Green, Sullinger, and Timelord fall into that category as well.  For people that complain about not gambling on Giannis, Ainge likes to gamble.  It’s just the law of averages has not worked in his favor...
