I thought that was a really good win considering that the Celtics were minus Jaylen and 2 of their 5's and the Knicks really showed up tonight. They competed all night and Morris went for 30, so losing this one would not have been out of the question.
But I think the focus on the 5 position here is a bit misguided at this point in time.
That they were in trouble at the 4 -5 became a reality the minute Al announced he wasn't coming back.
So they're trying to get by with a 3 or 4 headed center combination - and really had no other choice. None of them are complete players, but the first 3 all have useful NBA skills, and Brad should figure out how to get the best out of all of them.
Plus it's way too early to judge Poirier. He came here as a developmental project and while he hasn't lit the world on fire he also hasn't looked lost on the court.
To me, the far bigger issue is lack of 3 point shooting off the bench. Edwards is shooting 22% so far and G. Williams has made ZERO 3's for the season.
And that's a problem - though one that may not affect wins and losses till later on in the season because right now it's in their interest to give Hayward/Tatum/Kemba/Jaylen/Smart a lot of minutes because they need to figure out how to play together.
Plus their 'depth' at PG - Wannamaker - is throwing the ball away. Those are issues that will cost you wins vs good teams. This is looking like a team with 5 core guys, 3 limited skill guys in the middle and not enough guard or 3 point shooting depth.
