So Lebron promotes himself as some kind of power of social good, sponsor of education and entertainer. He bristles at the suggestion that he is just an athlete and is forever promoting himself as intelligent and sophisticated. Give me a break.

Hey Lebron, if you want to be respected as "more than an athlete" , learn how to spell and use correct grammar.

I really don’t understand what Lebron even wants to do. Don’t think he is a bad guy or anything, just weird.

For what it's worth I know three people that have mett LeBron in real life around events and nightclubs and that sort of thing and they've all said he's just a colossal jerk.

Heard the same things about Jordan as well. I guess having the biggest eagle in the world doesn't make you a humble person.

Lebron is a lot more than just an athlete at this point. His career is more wide ranging than any pro athlete I can think of.

He doesn't need your approval or anyone else's to consider himself more as a person than an athlete and you're literally telling him to just be an athlete at the end so it's even more moot. Not sure what the point is other than shallow resentment. Is he supposed to like drive off a cliff when he can't play pro sports anymore or...?

He just simply wants attention and praises.

On the court:  We will soon see because Father Time is already taking his lift from him.  If last year is any indication, he will have a rough fall from grace.

Off the court:  His charity has made him more than an athlete but he is polarizing a lot like him and a lot hate him so will his charisma be enough.

I think the NBA presenting him on the same level and Jordan is a sham though.    LeBron had to engineer teams to win titles, and is trying again.  Though statistically he is probably second best next to Wilt in being dominant in so many areas.

I agree, it sounds like resentment from the OP.  That said...
The list of superstar athletes who have tried to move into unrelated (or even related!) fields, and failed, is quite long.  They can use their bully pulpit for a while, but they should generally be using their transferable skills in their next "career".  This includes superstar characteristics such as hard work, eloquence (transferred from talking to the media for example), being a team player and continuous improvement.  If LeBron can do this, he will be successful and I have no problem with that whatsoever.

Forbes estimates James' net worth at $450 million. He moved to LA for a reason - to start moving in on the entertainment industry. It really doesn't matter what you think of him or whether his spelling is up to date. That kind of money and his customary drive mean he's already more than an athlete.

FWIW, most highly successful entrepreneurs are egomaniacs. So if your complaint is that James has a huge ego, I'm not sure it follows that he can't succeed in business. And what may actually set James apart is an ability to recognize his limitations and change in order to win. Look at how he's evolved as a player - he knows he's not 25-year-old LeBron anymore, and by adapting he's remained a top player. The contrast between James' transformation of his game and Carmelo's stubborn refusal is pretty stark. Will that carry over to business? Don't know, but it might.

This.

The "shut up & dribble" stuff is so played out.  Why are these athletes expected to be robots?

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism

Well, the Haast's eagle is actually the biggest eagle of all-time and they became extinct around 1400 - so he can try to say he has the biggest eagle, but it just isn't possible  ;)

As for Lebron - I have never been a fan, but hard to deny his level of success and determination. Even though he seems like a bit of a jerk, he has been quite charitable and I really don't have any doubt that he will continue to succeed in whatever he pursues after basketball. As fwf said, he doesn't really need our approval anyway.

I've been saying this for years, LeBron will someday run for political office.
