Ankle injury, looks like a sprain.

First report is it's not that serious.

Now we understand why superstars drop out of this thing.

This really doesn't make sense to me. We just saw Cousins tear his ACL in a scrimmage in Vegas. These guys are going to be playing basketball and training. It is not like they are sitting in bubble wrap at home if they don't do team USA.

But the intensity is completely different, right?

I mean, if it were apples to apples, then players would get hurt just as often during the offseason as during the season. I'll admit I haven't seen hard data on this, but it seems to happen much more often during the year.

Well the regular season is Oct/Nov-Apr with playoffs from Apr-Jun, so you're comparing a 9 month season to a 3 month off season.  I would expect something to occur more during a 9 month period than a 3 month period.

Other minor factors too going on in the regular season (frequency of intense games, travel, fatigue, compounding of minor injuries, etc.), but personally I'd think a lot of players are going just as hard in scrimmages and pick-up games during the off season as they are in regular season games.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

During these USA games the players also have access to immediate top work doctors and transportation to health care facilities. We obviously also as celtics fans once had a player die during an offseason scrimmage. Obviously he had a Pre-existing condition but maybe he would lived if there were top doctors on the sideline

Injuries always happen. Fans just don’t like them happening when the player suffers it not playing for their team   ;)

Personally I’m less bothered with him suffering it if he was playing for our country, as opposed to maybe getting it in a meaningless pickup game (which these guys all play during the summer anyway). In any case it doesn’t look too bad.

Well, not Devin Booker.  https://ftw.usatoday.com/2019/08/devin-booker-double-team-pickup-game-open-gym-suns-nba

More seriously, it makes sense that a lot of players are taking fewer chances during off-season tuneups. Marcus Smart would probably still crash into a wall and hunt charges, but most players...

He was fine, he walked off the court after a minor sprain.  If it was the regular season he most likely would have just played through it.

and out at least two games. Not a fan of our players beating their bodies up before the season and now we have ankle injury to contend with.

So, if they didn't play in the World Cup, they'd just be at home playing video games and putting their bodies in absolutely ZERO risk of any type of injury?  How did DeMarcus Cousins hurt himself?  ;)

These are basketball players.  In the offseason they play basketball.  A slight sprained ankle that keeps a player out 5 days is nothing to worry about and nothing that can be prevented, even in pickup games.

True, they can injure themselves in many ways. Ankle injuries can become buggy. I would shut him down.I always seem to worry more about our players anyway, especially one's that are crucial to our success.

Let me rephrase, I do not like Celtics players participating.  8)

I do believe it increases your odds to get an injury by playing in more games in a year though. I understand the positive benefits and even fast maturing for a young player but I believe the risk far outweighs that.

Tatum will miss the next two games (the final pool game vs Japan and the opening game of the 2nd round). Neither are elimination games. He will be re-evaluated on Monday, which is the first possible elimination game day for Team USA.

Hopefully he's fit and able to contribute to a Team USA gold medal!  :)
