I never paid that much attention to Hayward at Utah with couple games a season .A highly skilled all around player, that is what i thought of Hayward.
I have never seen that player on the Celtics but i am comfortable with the reports from off season that we will see a different player in 2019..
I only wish i could have seen The HAYWARD HORFORD  KEMBA combination
With Jason ,Jaylen and Marcus .--

When it boils down, this to me is the lingering disappointment of the off-season.  I’m over KI, I’m over no AD (though I don’t like that he’s where he is).  But Danny all but salvaged the off-season and was one move from doing so magnificently.  But couldn’t get Horford back (he’s got a large back too).

I am counting on players that we can’t count on to make up for Al.  Hopeful, but would have been more hopeful with Horford.

I think Pam Shriver (or Mary Joe Fernandez, I forget) interviewed Hayward last night during the US Open tennis broadcast

Danny should've overpaid for Horford I guess.

In the short term, he definitely should have, especially when you consider how wide open everything looks next season. But in the long term, the contract Horford got looks scary.

I would hate to see us keep Horford, fall short next year, and then have Horford's contract prevent us from building around Jaylen/Jayson while they're young. But the "what if" of keeping Horford will be hanging over us for a while
I'm bitter.

Unfortunately Horford is one of those guys that makes everyone around them better.  The Celtics no longer have a player like that on the team but I agree a max contract for him would have prohibited the team from building around the young guys down the road.

Well, having both horford and kemba was never a realistic possibility anyway.  DA did the best he could do once horford decided to walk.

Actually, further looking at the salary cap situation... I don't see how they can resign Brown after this season.  This is most likely his last year in green unless the Celtics can find a suitor for Hayward's albatross contract.

How could we not resign an RFA?

Someone will definitely offer him the max (and before die-hards jump in arguing he's only worth 20 million a year, FFS Terry Rozier just got 20 million a year) his market value is going to be in line with what Jamal Murray and Ben Simmons just got (5 years 170 million or roughly 34 million a year).  It seems incredibly unlikely that the Celtics will go upto or even into the luxury tax to retain Brown on a non-championship contender considering they'll still have to pay Tatum the very next season so my guess is Brown is gone unless they can move Hayward's 34 million player option for the 20-21 season.

I'm guessing this situation is also the reason Romeo Langford was drafted.

I'm excited to see a hopefully heathy Gordon Hayward. He has a skill set that neither of the J's possess. He see's the floor well, he's a bright defender, a very good passer too, besides being a very good scorer.

I agree with the OP the loss of Horford was huge, this team specifically would have benefited by his well rounded game. I'm hoping Hayward will fill in on the offensive end on what Al would have provided.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism

I am not saying it would have been impossible to keep Horford and sign Kemba, but it would have been much more difficult. When it was official Kyrie was leaving, we were all assuming we would re-sign Horford and [I guess] keep Rozier. A s&t with Rozier and Kemba would have been impossible had we kept Horford since Rozier's salary would have only counted for half going out, but Kemba's salary would still count for the entire amount coming in.

I guess that's where the s&t possibilities with BKN/Kyrie come in, but it gets a bit hazy about exactly how that would have worked and that would have cost us at least a few 'assets'. Let's just say, it was more of a Kemba for Horford swap than a Kemba for Kyrie swap when it comes down to the actual salary cap.
