Man I really wanted 1 of the 2 Kevin's.  Give me a few to figure out my next pick.

I was hoping you’d get Durant, under my theory of mismatches being the key to this game.

Looking to trade up to the end of the second round, have two 3rd round picks as ammo.

I was unsure about how well Hondo would adapt to the 3 point line because he was more a scorer than shooter.

That worried me about him.

That was a concern of mine too, but throughout interviews of various teammates of his, supposedly he learned how to shoot, and kept improving it overtime. I think he could adapt and learn to shoot a modern day, NBA 3PT line because of his work ethic.

And even if he doesn't, the positives far outweighs that negative. He's a tremendous athlete, he doesn't get tired, he's a relentless defender, and overall, an amazing teammate that is willing to do anything and sacrifice for the good the team.

I thought a lot of names on this pick actually, but I cannot let him pass.

With the 5th pick, in the 2nd round of the draft, the Detroit Pistons are happy to select a winner, a competitor, and an amazing teammate.

8x Champion
13x All-Star
11x All NBA Teams
8x All NBA Defensive Teams
Finals MVP

Johnny "Hondo" Havlicek

Interesting pick. Low peak player if I'm looking at the right metrics though.
Sigh......

You won't win this game based on stats and metrics because the numbers don't translate across eras with different offensive philosophies, different rules and different levels of competition. The stats will help to explain abilities and tendencies and how they might work with other players.

Hondo was a ferocious defender, an exceptional passer and rebounder and he could shoot. He was one of the greatest sixth men ever and yet was still the #1 star on two title teams. He could play with anyone.

I think Hondo is being picked right about where he should be selected. The Kawhi pairing is interesting in a cliff hanger type way. I just now need to know who else is going to be added to make this work. Can't wait to find out on Monday.

Yeah, if a metric doesn’t like Hondo, maybe it’s not all that useful as a metric.

Yeah I really wanted him.  I thought he would have been perfect next to Magic.

Oh no it likes him, top 35 player of all time career wise. Just don't think that his peak was all that impressive, at least maybe not good enough to be selected in the top 20.

You have impressive wings so far, 2 championship players that get at it on defense.  I didn’t like the Kawhi pick but I think I see how you are building your team now and I like it.  This is a fun exercise and I look forward to seeing how these 12 teams pan out.

And what I'm saying is that I'm sceptical that Hondo's stats in his amazing 71 season will translate to the modern game. The 70s had some very inflated stats for superstars due to factors such as pace and expansion, and I'm not sure if Hondo is a good enough player to carry a team's creation when you already have a guy like Kawhi who's not a great playmaker.
You are assuming Hondo has to be the team's playmaker. Why? The draft is far from over. Yoki has tons of time and all time great playmakers to add players to be his playmaker. Hondo doesn't have to carry a team's creation, though, he could if he had to.

Hondo did so many things at an elite level, his game would translate. In this era where Kawhi and Jimmy Butler are superstars, Havlicek would be dominant.

With the 7th pick of Round 2 the Portland Trailblazers select the only remaining at least 3-Time MVP winner, the one, the only Moses Malone.

Like Magic, he found his greatest success playing with other HOFers in their prime and I need some muscle down low.

Question would be how much? Butler level doesn't move the needle all that much for a second round pick in an all time draft, although Kawhi level (with better playmaking and more logged games) does, even if I think Hondo wasn't that type of guy. Good point on the playmaking part though, had some "drafting blindness" there

I concur. In a draft where you have to combat Shaq, Wilt, Russell, Kareem and Hakeem, I would want Moses Malone guarding and roughing up those guys. Just a sneaky good pick to have with Magic, though admittedly, I thought a Durant/Magic pairing may have propelled you into a leader position here early. Too bad he didn't fall to you.

Like the pick, fits perfectly alongside Magic with his finishing and rebounding.
