Tre Waters signs 2 way contract with Celtics

NBA rumors: Celtics, draft pick Tremont Waters agree to two-way contract

The Boston Celtics have come to terms on one of their picks from the 2019 NBA Draft.

Tremont Waters has agreed to a two-way contract with the C's, first reported by The Boston Globe's Gary Washburn on Tuesday.

Waters was the 51st overall pick (second round) in June's draft. He averaged 15.3 points and 5.9 assists in 29 games for the Louisiana State Tigers last season. The 21-year-old guard has been playing for the Celtics' Summer League team in Las Vegas this month, and he's averaged 10 points and 3.5 assists over the first two games (both wins). Boston's next game is Tuesday night against the Denver Nuggets.

In addition to his playmaking ability, Waters' defense is quite impressive. He even won the SEC Defensive Player of the Year award last season.

Waters isn't likely to see much playing time for Boston next season, but he's a good option to have in the fold in case of injury.

I wouldn't be shocked if someone signs him.

He's currently under contract to the Celts, no one can sign him unless they let him go. They can also convert the contract to a two way deal and still no other team can sign him. If they simply cut him and try to get him to go to Maine, then another team could step in and sign him.

can the celtics trade wannamaker, staple his salary to him, for a highly protected 2nd rounder? just jettions wannamaker since i think water can fill in.

The Celtics aren't close to the tax, they don't need to trade a minimum contract with cash to duck it.

If the C's want Tacko on the roster they can just give him a roster spot and cut someone.

Believe DA jumped the gun on Strus and Wannamaker.  Couldn't have forseen Waters, Fall, and even Green or Onuaku playng this well is SL.  Pleasant surprise! 
Wouldn't be surprised to see Strus waived with some cash incentive/compensation, and maybe Wannamaker and Yabu traded along with a 2nd rounder to clear some roster space.  Kemba, Smart, Waters, and Edwards should be more than able to secure the point!  Will try to get Green and Onuaku on to the Red Claws.
