Right now I would say Jaylen is more deserving.

I have serious concerns about Tatums motor.  Very serious concerns.

The Celtics would be foolish to not offer Brown a max extension if they don’t intend to trade him.  He’s getting a max next summer.  Perhaps the Celtics could negotiate a little less than a max for Brown by giving him a 5-year deal, max at year 1 (which is required for a five year deal) but with smaller or no raises (which as far as I can tell is not required of a 5-year deal).  A 5-year, $146.25 million deal could be a competitive offer with the 4 years, $125.8 million offer he could expect the next summer.

I’m also curious to see if Brown will go into these negotiations without an agent, as he has done to this point in his career.

Nope, none of these guys are worth the ridiculous salaries they get.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Jaylen will be offered an extension, but it certainly won't be for the max. My guess is somewhere around 4yrs/$90M and Jaylen will probably just wait.

It would probably be smart for the Cs to just match whatever contract another team offers for both players (unless Tatum just blows up this year - Jaylen's extension negotiations will take place this off-season). At the very least, if things aren't working out, they are only on the hook for 4 yrs and 5% raises rather than 5 yrs and 8% raises.

I agree with those saying that we will know better by the end of the year.

The keys to the car are being handed to the "J's"...it's still to be determined whether that car turns into a cadillac, a chrysler, or a clunker! :)

Yeah, by the end of the year is after the extension deadline for Brown in October, so sure, we’ll know by then...

I have more faith in Brown, I saw signs that he finally found his game at the end of last season. I like how he ended, he works hard.

As to Tatum, he's "too cool for school" I question his motor big time. I can't remember ever seeing Tatum diving for a loose ball or reacting when someone gets physical with him. This year, for me, will tell the story. Some players need a trade to light the fire under them. I'm hoping Jayson isn't one.

Either at this point is near being a max player...But then again, it is the NBA.

They both project stat wise very well and are in line with a lot of stars' progressions.  We kind of have to do it

Sleepwalking/coasting through an entire season is certainly a concern for me.  Especially for a 2nd year guy who is supposed to be improving and establishing himself in the league.
