I ask this question every year, I know, but after Kemba signs (assuming he does of course, knock on wood), can we match an offer on these guys and go over the cap?

It's weird because I think we will be at around 103mill or so after Kemba, which gives us about 5 mill to find a random vet. Can we then use the full midlevel, and THEN match whatever Theis is offered and go over the cap?

Celtics have actually renounced Terry. He’s an unrestricted free agent. Apparently Charlotte are chasing him as a cheaper replacement for Kemba.

Well one source has a different timestamp. News came we'd extend the QO before Kemba gave word he was signing publicly last night.

We extended the QO to him by the Saturday deadline. We will renounce it after we meet with Kemba and finalize his max contract officially with Boston. Now they might not do it immediately if they're working on some sort of Kemba sign and trade, but he will be an unrestricted FA.

No we'll have a bit more than a million in space.

There are roster holds and a cap hold for Theis. We can use that space and then match any offer Theis recieves.

In general FAs have cap holds such that you cannot sign a new free agent and then use bird rights to exceed the cap. However often times certain players have cap holds far smaller than what their new contracts will be. This is less common in the latest CBA but still happens a lot with rookies. So it sometimes happens but not a ton.

Read that tweet again — Celtics “will” renounce.  The Celtics will not have the cap room to sign Walker until the trade with Baynes goes through, which cant happen until the end of the moratorium at the end of this week when Phoenix has the cap room.  Until that time, the Celtics will keep Rozier’s rights.  This a) allows them to work out a sign-and-trade with Rozier, and b) offers insurance in case Kemba pulls a DeAndre Jordan (wouldn’t expect that, but neither did the Mavs).

If you listen to players all it would take is that 5th year to get that done. Which IMO MJ should do.

They already offered a 5th year, just not at the dollars he wanted to stay.

Charlotte has made the decision to move on from Kemba and let their cap sheet roll over so they can rebuild.

5 year max is what I mean. Also Hornets could have 30 million in space next off season that's if they sign Walker. Cap roll over doesn't make sense unless you think they are targeting 2 max guys and are letting Walker walk for those guys.

Still, if Charlotte changes their mind, they could come back and offer up to $80 million more than Boston.  Would Kemba turn that down, even if he’d committed to Boston already?  I’m sure there’s an offer can make that would make things uncomfortable at this point.  It’s unlikely, as I said, but it’s something that the Celtics should prepare themselves for, and keeping Rozier’s rights until Kemba is officially in the fold is the way to do that.

It makes sense in that they have essentially no talent other than their FAs (Lamb/Walker) and several bad deals they need to get off of while rebuilding their young talent. They need to keep drafting guys and see if Monk can play.

I don't think Charlotte plans to try and play the FA game, incredibly unlikely to succeed.

I can't say I know what Kemba would do. Most guys are truly done when the committed reports come out.

But given that MJ and Kupchek have been firm about not paying the luxury tax I cannot imagine they'd ever offer the full super-max.
