There have been recent reports saying the Bucks were fearing that we'd offer Brogdon an offer sheet that would be "too much for them", but they breathed a sigh of relief when they turned their attention more towards Kemba, since it likely meant we would be out of the running for Brogdon.

This was also tweeted by a Bucks reporter recently:

Bulls, Suns, Mavericks, Celtics (if no Kemba) listed as teams that could offer a “toxic offer sheet”, front loaded to Malcolm Brogdon making it difficult for Bucks to match.

I'm just wondering, wouldn't we have been better off going after Brogdon, and then using the MLE and remaining 10M in cap space to add 2 bigs? I don't think Brogdon would get more than 25M a year in FA, unless I'm wrong about his market.

I love Kemba btw, but wouldn't Brogdon and adding 2 bigs be a wiser move?

depends on a couple of things.

1) this isnt a 1 year deal, as much as Danny wants to go from being blamed in the media for screwing stuff up and he wants to immediately be a threat for the championship, its going to take a couple of years.

2) Brogdon and someone like Bryant, I love that idea more than anything, but there are cons to this. Kemba is a stud player now. and there is a very good chance kemba is even better with better players around him. And having a star added to 2 blooming stars and a once upon a time star who may possible get back to that is phenomnal, even if team doesnt get a proper center until next year, there are alot of assets moving forward, and maybe even capspace if Hayward opts out. so there is a better chance at acquiring the center of the future during or after the season after seeing where the pieces fall in terms of potential and fit.

My guess is Danny and Co. want a more established vet to help reel in the young guys.
2021 Houston Rockets
PG: Kyrie Irving/Patty Mills/Jalen Brunson
SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo/Robert Covington
C: Kristaps Porzingis/Bobby Portis/James Wiseman

For the same reason Kemba is worth a bigger contract.   He is a better talent.

Throw in the fact it would take an overpay to get him away from the Bucks....

It likely boils down to opportunity cost.  If reports are true, Kemba could potentially agree to sign with Boston as early as tomorrow evening.  That's a huge win if Ainge doesn't need to worry about meetings with other teams.

The pursuit of Brogdon would be a much larger gamble.  What if he gets matched by the Bucks and nobody else signs in Boston?

There's also a secondary reason: If you sign Brogdon to an offer-sheet, the chances remain high that Milwaukee will match. However, they would definitely take all of the 3-day window to match.

And at that point, you're left with no signings, and most of the marquee free agents off the market.

Brogdon more of an injury risk too.  Reason he slid in draft as I recall.

If Kemba is coming for free you sign him and don’t think twice about other unproven - with potential players.
No need to worry about the center position.. there are going to be so many guys available for the MLE and the vet min that it’s not worth listing them... we can also use jaylen to trade for turner once we accumulate enough contracts to trade...
Another avenue is wait till mid December when teams will be looking to trade pieces and snatch a good center then ( the way Toronto got Gasol )

Kemba > Brogdon + mid-level big

Brogdon is 26 years old and averages 15 and 3. He’s a role player that we’d be paying like a star.

Someone suggested this on another thread, but if the Kemba negotiations breakdown because maybe CHA caves in or something changes, then I'd immediately switch my attention to Brogdon and offer him in the 22-24M/Year range.

Kemba sounds like a guy that could make the J's better... He has already proven himself as a stud player and now just wants to Win with a group of guys...

Beyond the relative rankings as players, being a RFA is a big impediment. Adds a lot of uncertainty to the player and the team pursuing him.

Yeah this is the Celtics rationale.

I think if Kemba has change of heart the Celtics will go in on Brogdon next.

Brogdon isn't a max player by any standard. Giving him $25m+ will probably be a disastrous signing that every Celtic fan is lamenting 2 years down the road (if not sooner).

You can only have 2 or 3 (and in very limited circumstances, 4) super high paid players on your roster. It would be foolish - and crippling - to make one of those guys Brogdon.
