Baynes opted into his deal believing he could be on a contender and have a role on this team. Obviously things changed after that, and I'm sure there was mutual agreement that Baynes could get traded later since it didn't look like we'd be a true title threat ourselves, and he preferred it to be with a contender.

And yet, they essentially salary dump him to the Suns??

Yikes. That just adds another dimension to the idea that Ainge is cold-blooded and that future FA's will become even more wary of coming to Boston. I think if Baynes opted-out, he could have gotten slightly more money elsehwere, even on a contending team.

According to a handful of local Suns reporters/sources, it doesn't look like Baynes will get bought out and he'll have a role on that Suns team. This goes against what Keith Smith had tweeted last night.

We may have 35M+ in cap space but this latest trade kind of makes recruiting a bit tougher IMO.

I like what Ainge did. Baynes didn't get the job done last year and was hurt most of the year. We need a massive upgrade at center and Ainge knows it. I don't think any free agent will be offended that Aaron Baynes got dealt to Phoenix for cap relief. Teams do this all the time.

They had an understanding when Baynes opted in. I'm sure if Aron knew things would shake out this way, he would've just opted out and went to free agency.

So yeah, it's kinda crappy.

We have no idea what they agreed to.  I seriously doubt if Ainge promised not to trade him, he wouldn't have done so without his permission.

I’m not so sure Ainge wouldn’t go against his word.

Thanks for reminding me that he was out a lot of games due to injuries.

I guess it's what he gets then. If you can't stay healthy and produce sufficiently here in Boston then you should just go to the Suns.

I agree. This is a "what have you done for me lately" world. Baynes wasn't good last year- time to move on.

Pretty sure he could have easily opted out himself and gotten paid elsewhere.

Trading him was fine. Trading him to a bad team kind of makes this situation look really awkward considering Baynes could have opted out himself, and even when they decided that a trade was for the best, Baynes communicated he wanted it to be with a contender.

People on here can act chill about it all and say it's "business", but many will come back a month later and be like, "why are FAs not as willing to come here??"  :P

Baynes is getting paid 6 million dollars, a well above market contract after a year in which he was riddled with injuries. He will get to play a good part of October, November, December in sunny Phoenix with likely plenty of minutes before inevitably getting bought out and joining whatever contender he wants.

I do not feel bad for Baynes.

There's no way I believe Phoenix won't buy out Baynes eventually if he wants them too.

They bought out Tyson Chandler and Austin Rivers last year, both capable vets.  Bought out Greg Monroe the year before.

It was believed they signed Trevor Ariza last year with the understanding they wanted him for a vet presence, but then would trade him or buy him out in the 2nd half of the year (which they did).

If anything I think that's what they'll do with Baynes.  Keep him for the first half of the year, try to trade him to a playoff team for an asset, then waive him if they can't, freeing Baynes to sign with any team he wants before the 3/1 deadline.

Baynes is not in a bad situation.

I would expect Phoenix to explore trading him to a contender without the concern of  taking back salary.

At least a smart team would do that.

plausible explanation plus I could have sworn there was something mentioned after Baynes opted in and Horford's situation deteriorated that Danny was going to trade Baynes to accommodate a request he made.  Baynes will get playing time in Phx and possibly bought out to go where he wants.  not too sure he'd have gotten the same $ if he became a FA with his injuries last year.

We are obviously having an awful offseason, but this strikes me as just inventing something to get upset about.... for all we know Baynes is thrilled. As others mentioned, he probably gets to put up some numbers for a few months, gets his money, and then signs wherever he wants for the playoffs after he sees how teams gel. Not to mention, injury prone guy gets to work with a legendary training staff. This very could be the absolute best situation for him. Weird thread...
