Did drafting James Young affect Ainges drafting this year.

Yes. No doubt. Rozier Hunter and Mickey all have more experience and better work ethics.

Young was never somebody I paid attention to in the draft so I was surprised when we picked him.

I was hopeful that we would draft Nurkic to shore up the 5 position, but he was taken one slot ahead of us.  As for post draft hindsight, I probably would have taken KJ Mcdaniels, Rodney Hood, or Clint Capella instead.

We actually have zero evidence that Young has a poor work ethic.

So I take it you weren't watching in the Summer League this year when Young was out there:

1) Standing around doing nothing when off the ball on offense
2) Standing around doing nothing when off the ball on defense
3) Throwing up non-stop bricks from three when he had the ball on offense
4) Watching opponents walk straight by him when on the ball on defense
5) Staring lazily at every rebound and loose ball, while making zero effort to go after them

Or in summary, just generally standing around doing absolutely nothing of value the entire time he was on the court.

Not to mention the sobbing face on the bench once he got hurt and started to realised he had just spent the past 2 weeks being significantly outplayed by rookies and D-league scrubs.  Not exactly 'swagger' right there.

I almost always agree with you CS, but here I can't. Young hurt himself diving for a loose ball in SL. His SL performance as it pertains to defense and all around awareness was markedly better than his time on the court for the C's last season. He made efforts to stay in front of guys and made attempts on loose/available balls. He's shooting the 3 so much because his offensive game is going to key on that shot. He's quite a good shooter, as his 44% clip in Maine suggests. Those shots WILL fall eventually.

He made enough strides on D in SL that he didn't look like complete and utter disaster/liability. Below average, sure. But good enough to be hidden in a good defensive line-up. As long he keeps improving in that area, he' ll be okay. The offensive tools are all there, but to get on the court he needs to improve his work ethic (reportedly done this summer), improve his defense (seemed to be improving in SL) and keep getting stronger so he can play the 2 and the 3 regularly (making good strides towards that).

There's a lot of IF's with James Young, but he can be a really good player if those ifs turn out well. Certainly the kind of guy you wanna roll the dice on with your second pick, 17th overall, in a draft starting your first true rebuilding year.

I don't think there's enough body of evidence at this point to suggest Young has poor work ethic.
