Well, he's clearly a far worse prospect than Exum.

But given how little we've seen of Exum, Young has far less chance of being a bust.

Mike

Not really. Exum has shown a ton of skill, which Young hasn't. He can 'bust' relative to expectations and still be on par with Young's median outcome.

Young himself has plenty of bust potential, all he has to do is not improve on D and not become an offensive focal point. He would be like Avery Bradley on offense and James Harden on D.

Two points......first he is so young, no telling what he really becomes in FIVE years.

Second.....worst he'll be I think is Marshon Brooks .

Just hoping , a Kobe clone emerges.

Exum hasn't shown a ton of anything because hardly anyone has seen him play.

The main scenario I can see for sending Young to the D-League is if he looks completely lost on defense and needs a lot of remedial work.  I don't care how well he can score.  It's important that he learns how to play defense.  A big concern about Young is that he has poor defensive fundamentals.  I'm seeing quite a few comparisons around the 'net to James Harden on defense.  How much value does Young have if he turns out to be a decent scorer, but not as good as Harden on either offense or defense?

The main benefit of Young being so young (I suspect) is that maybe as he matures he'll have a greater appreciation for effort on the defensive end. I'm not really expecting a vast improvement to the rest of his game or for him to grow significantly.

That said, when I see him the first player I instantly am reminded of is Michael Redd. Besides the intellectually lazy comp how they're similar size and lefty, their strengths are similar. Young, like Redd, appears to be a gunner whose bread and butter will be coming off P & R's, mid range jumpers, and threes.

If Young blossoms into a prime Redd type I'll be ecstatic.

That is a good comparison, I think he is slightly more athletic than Redd.  You have to realize he is what only 18 and has some more maturing to do bodywise.   He could grow more even but I would not think more than an inch or two.

I was very glad to see a thread on James Young. Since the draft and his dnp at SL its been like he has been an after thought. He even had a birthday somewhat recently and I did not hear a peep from cb posters. I think its time we start showing some love to this kid.

Young was interviewed recently(ill try and find link later on if I can) and he said after talking with Brad Stevens that it would be his defensive

Please correct me if I am wrong here but I think it may be better for Young to be around the team and not in the Dleague. Having Avery Bradley rub off on this kid would be great. Also the competition at the 2 guard spot on our team is so good that James Young soak up the play of Thornton, Bradley, Turner......going against those guys in practice is gonna have to get him a lot better in many ways. And its for those reasons that I do not believe he will end up to be a player like Nick Young (Swaggy P).

For some reason these players remind me, each in their own way, of James Young:
JR Smith, James Harden, Nick Young, Klay Thompson, Michael Redd, Bradley beal, Dion waiters, Kevin Martin

Lets hope that James learns how to play great defense from BS and Avery/Smart. Then I think he can at least be like some of these players but with better defense.....fingers crossed!

Nah, let him go the Bradley route. Experience is a better teacher for him at this point, esp since we dont have an established star at his position. He needs minutes and he is not gonna get it travelling with the team most of the time.
