Think of it this way. If we have a high pick, we can pick anyone we want, including those "steals" that you speak of. A high pick is always better than low pick no matter how you spin it.

I've been thinking about doing this for a while but just haven't had time, but I'm curious to see just how many from those drafted in 1-5 went on to become all stars? How many in 6-10? How many in 10-15? 16-20? 20-30? And 2nd rounders? Maybe take those drafted from 2002-2012. The only criteria would be at least one all star appearance.

You would have to do it as what % of top picks in hyped up drafts were all stars vs top picks in perceived to be weak drafts.  We traded KG and Pierce this year and not last year in large part for that reason.

So if we want to win a ring ASAP, we want the fifth pick. To complete our unstoppable Randle/Sully/KO frontcourt, of course.

I don't agree. The draft is luck, there are very few sure things.
That said everyone wants a top 3 pick. I am just saying the draft comes down to luck in many ways.

Here are the top 4 picks last couple years not counting this past draft...

2012: 1 NO Anthony Davis
2   CHA   Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
3   WAS   Bradley Beal
4   CLE   Dion Waiters
2011: 1   CLE   Kyrie Irving
2   MIN   Derrick Williams
3   UTA   Enes Kanter
4   CLE   Tristan Thompson
2010: 1   WAS    John Wall
2   PHI   Evan Turner
3   NJN   Derrick Favors
4   MIN   Wesley Johnson
2009: 1   LAC   Blake Griffin
2   MEM Hasheem Thabeet
3   OKC   James Harden
4   SAC   Tyreke Evans
2008: 1   CHI   Derrick Rose
2   MIA   Michael Beasley
3   MIN   O.J. Mayo
4   SEA   Russell Westbrook

A couple duds in there most definitely.. There are players in this current draft that can help out celtics reload process

TP for you.

Seems like being in the top 3 is definitely the place we'd want to be. At the very least, being in the top5 almost assures us a starter.
