i read that as hitting the clause would be part of the $36 million total. so he might make less if he doesnt rebound more. which would be good as i maintain we bid against our-self's and gave him the 4th year despite also giving him $1.25-$2.50 million more per year then any other team would/could have offered

I think that's wishful thinking. It's an incentive clause, not a penalty clause.

The most glaring deficiency since Green came to Boston has been his rebounding. The Celtics were so bothered by his lack of production in that area that when they signed him to a 4-year, $36 million extension last summer, Ainge included a rebounding incentive clause in the deal.

More rebounds, more pay.

Incentive clauses are pretty common in professional sports. The NFL, in particular, is chock full of 'em.

They're just not brought up very often.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
Smart of Danny to put in the incentive that's one of the weakest parts of Green's game. With his size an Athleticism he should be pulling down something like 6 or 7 nightly. Pierce was a beast on the boards at the 3.

Was in there when he signed, hasn't helped ONE bit. How are you out there all night pulling in 1-2rbs???? Shame.
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

im aware of them. i have to wonder thought how they effect the salary cap. this year in particular with us being something like $200k under the luxury tax line, what would happen if Green hit his redounding number and earned a bonus? i would imagine it would be at least $50k, otherwise its not really noticeable for someone making $9 million per.

for fun lets say its a $250k bonus and he hits it. would that screw our repeater tax standings? or are all potential bonuses factored in at the start?

I don't believe it affects the salary cap--otherwise I'm sure we would've heard about it by now in a different case.

i did a little research and they actually are http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q72

what im still not clear on is how the number used for the tax apron is effected by them. as that only touches on the salary cap and exception and not the luxury tax.

its also interesting to note that the incentive can be worth up to 15% of a players salary for the year.

Green didn't meet his incentive last year, which means it's classified as an unlikely incentive this year.  As an unlikely incentive, it does not count against the salary cap.  It also doesn't count towards salary if he is involved in a trade.  However, it does count against the hard cap (as otherwise incentives would be a way to circumvent the hard cap).  It does not count against the luxury tax unless the incentive is earned, but presumably the Celtics are preparing as if it will be earned at present, which is one reason they're so close to the luxury tax.  Around the deadline, it wouldn't surprise me if they suddenly has a few hundred thousand more wiggle room as it becomes clear Green won't hit his incentives.

Green was pretty dismissive of the clause last year. He seemed to take offense at the idea that he'd play to an incentive like that and insulted that Danny had put it in. To me, it almost sounded like he'd go out of his way not to play to it.
