Coaches coach to win and to develop players. They don't coach to do the general manager's job of making players more enticing for trade scenarios or to get the most out of the money invested in a player.

Coaches sometimes get fired for not playing who the GM wants to see on the floor.  George Karl in Denver was an example.

also, I'm guessing Stevens got a long term contract from Ainge with the understanding that the first year or two will involve showcasing/tanking.

He can point to what Doc went through and how successful he became as an example.

That usually happens with bad GMs. Also, I think Karl is a bad example as he had a lot of reasons to be moved in Denver including a long record of playoff failure.

Showcasing does happen often. Humph isn't showcased because, as many others have pointed out, his expiring contract is more than enough value. Ainge and Doc showcased players before the KG era (Wally Sczerbiak, Ricky Davis, Delonte West, Ryan Gomes, Al Jefferson, Sebastian Telfair, etc.), so nothing new here. I expected it this year and it's happening.
It seems you are confused here. Most of the players you mention were among the best players on the team while they were here. They were not 'showcased'. They were played because they were the better players. If they are the examples you are giving to support your claim, then your claim seems unsupported. Telfair was not one of our better players, but he also fell behind in the rotation as the season proceeded.

I suppose playing KG and Pierce last year was showcasing them for a trade?

Fans like to over-think these things and come up with these fancy narratives. You can speculate all you want, but don't pretend that citing those players is evidence.

TBH I wouldn't want his job right now. Good or bad team, the log jams at PF and SG give me nightmares as a numbers guy. Someone always looses out so "experimenting" is really the only option.
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

I don't like speculating about what is/isn't in Stevens' mind, but I will say that Jeff Green has been driving me crazy and if his 'benching' last night is directly related to his play, then good.   I love Green -- probably the player I root for more than any other.  But watching him stand in the corner play after play is making me a crazy person.  This just CANNOT be what Stevens is asking him to do.  A typical possession for Green is stand in the corner wait, wait, hold up your hand to suggest 'I'm open', watch the rest of the team move, watch the ball go to the opposite side of the court or into the middle, and then watch the shot go up and then start running down the court on D.   Occasionally he gets the ball in position to make a move, but 90% of the time, he stands. I thought we'd see a different Green this year and was encouraged by Game 1.  But he's back to 'Stand in the Corner' Green.
