Rondo is THE veteran on this team (Bogans doesn't count). He's the longest-tenured Celtic right now and he's played in two NBA championships. He plays the point guard position which is a natural leadership position. He's one of the best PGs in the league, if not one of the best players overall. He's intelligent on the court and doesn't do anything stupid off the court.

It's a natural fit for him to be captain. He is the leader of the Celtics now.

I'd be shocked if he wasn't named captain.

When talking about Rondo's behavior people always bring up the incident with the water bottle or his ejections or what not but never how he organized team practices over the summer last year or how he helped Bradley when he was struggling a couple years ago, visiting him and giving him encouragement. There were also reports of Rondo and Sullinger helping each other during rehab, KG and Pierce love and back the guy, and for the last several years the Rondo-Doc relationship has been good and growing(which now gets ignored because of one unconfirmed story about a near-fight between them).

As far as I can tell, all of Rondo's "issues" have to do with how passionate he gets about the game. Sure it's not good to go overboard - especially for a leader - but this past season has probably been a humbling experience for him and I'm sure this coming one will be too. I don't doubt that he'll make more mistakes but this isn't DeMarcus Cousins or Andrew Bynum we're talking about. Rondo has his heart in the right place and that's what I want in a captain, especially during these times.

Longest-tenured as a Celtics, only player in the team with an NBA championship ring, played in two NBA Finals, played in a few Eastern Conference Finals, at one point a starting PG for the All-Stars team...

I don't see why he isn't the captain or the leader after Paul Pierce is gone. In my eyes NOW, he is the team captain.

Because it doesn't it doesn't fit with the "Rondo is the anti-Christ" narrative some posters like to cling to.

I don't see why the media would completely fabricate stories. I believe he had an ongoing rift with Ray. I believe there were problems with Doc (perhaps why he wasn't willing to stick around with KG/PP leaving?). And I believe he orchestrated the clash between younger players and the vets.

You can choose to not believe any of them. I believe where there is smoke there is fire. He is temperamental on the court and no reason to believe he can be even moreso off it.

Ray did whatever he could to burn down basically any relationship he had in Boston when he left. Not just Rondo, but KG, Pierce, Doc, management - everyone. I hardly think that's a testament of Rondo being destructive.

As for Doc, they've had differences, but at least they're men who can work things out. Meanwhile, you have elite PGs like Chris Paul and Deron Williams who not only get into disagreements with their coaches, but even get them fired. Yeah, so Rondo's totally a bad guy, right?

I'm not even sure what you mean by the "clash between younger players and the vets". Rondo got the entire team together last offseason to get ready for the season early, the veterans all loved him, and the young players all looked up to him. He and KG basically had a brotherly relationship, he had the respect of Pierce and Terry, he was a big factor (if not the biggest) in Bradley's bounceback from his underwhelming season, and was/is a big presence of the recoveries of Green and Sullinger.

There's a reason why guys like Carmelo and Lebron would love to be his teammate. There's a reason why Rondo has earned the respect of Kobe and Kidd, two guys who don't exactly dish out praise left and right. Sure, Rondo might have issues with officials, but there is no better teammate you could ask for.

Also, a big LOL at the bolded statement. This is the media we're talking about. They always make a big deal out of the littlest things.

Maybe the smoke isn't with Rondo, but with Ray who's out of control ego seems to have created a rift between him and most of the franchise. Interesting that, when there was a clash between some of the younger guys and some of the vets, you lay the blame for the entire incident on the only person involved in the incident to make an attempt to resolve it.

Well said.

Again, some people just want to blame someone for everything that's going on with the team.

Ray left = Rondo's fault
And not because he was trade bait for the last 2 years he was here.

Doc left = Rondo's fault
Not because he quit on the team and didn't want to rebuild.

PP and KG got traded = Rondo's fault
Not because Danny Ainge wanted to kick start the rebuilding phase.

You got dumped = Rondo's fault.
Not because you suck as a boyfriend

You got fired = Rondo's fault.
Not because you were late for the past 3 weeks.
