@European NBA fan
I agree with the "circumstances" thing you explained. But in the end, we are still talking about top star player because you are looking at underrated stars (which is great btw, because underrated players are cheaper and easier to pursue) who are stars (even though they are underrated).
I think it's true you need "top ten" or "top 25" players to win a title. You can do without but you sure are better if you do have a top 10 guy with a strong cast. And this is the way most of the NBA players see the games themselves, it's all about hierarchy.
I see there are still some ppl talking about Josh Smith. Behind all this talk there is DH. "Smith is a budy of DH, go for him and then go for DH" seems to be popular thinking. But DA can't be sure that trading for Smith will bring Dwight Howard and having Rondo/Smith (and maybe Green) with or without Howard would be BAD (no floor spacing at all, it would be painful to watch).
We have a lot to learn from NY. They took the time to put some good pieces together (their team before the Melo trade) but they rushed on Melo, fearing that he would be traded to the Nets, when he could have waited for the summer to sign in NY (this guy is a moron). Now, they have some very good pieces in Melo & Stat, but they overpaid Chandler and have a weak supporting cast to go along their stars. They are not gonna win a championship as long as the Bulls and Heat current teams exist.
You can't build a contending roster on the fly by doing 2 trades and signing 1 big name FA. It takes time. DH knows that. You can bring Smith if you want, Howard is still not walking through that door and he is right. Give Danny some time to put some assets and pieces together before going after any big name player.
