This is great and all, but I wished my Celtics had that same level of loyalty when Leon Powe wrecked his knee playing hurt for the playoffs with KG out a few seasons ago.

Not to be jaded, but it's easier to be loyal when it doesn't cost the club much to do so.  In Powe's case, throwing him a minimum deal right away wasn't deemed to be cost effective, so they waited until he secured the same deal elsewhere before throwing their half hearted deal out there.

It still bothers me three seasons later that the Cs didn't stand by Powe, who played on a bad knee in the playoffs in a contract year to help his shorthanded team, because they were shorthanded without KG.

Leon Powe wasn't in the Celtics future plans when healthy, why make him take a roster spot when he couldn't play? Remember all the discussions we were having prior to the injury about DA having to make a choice between Baby and Powe the following free-agency? That's pretty much what happened. We were hurting, we didn't know what KG was going to give us. The roster spot itself was important to keep, at least until DA explored all the options that were available.

The Celtics are not a charity, they're in the business of building championship teams. If Powe were a bit more patient, the offer for him from the Celtics would've been made for sure in my opinion. But they had to do due diligence and explore the market, particularly when there was/is some urgency to make the most of the current window we have. And health concerns were a big part of the roster without Powe, adding him would've only made a difficult situation even more difficult.

And you forget, Celtics wanted to offer the 1 year deal with team option, something that Powe didn't accept from the Celtics. He wanted from the Celtics a 1 year deal, so he could be unrestricted the next year. When the Celtics didn't bite, he went looking for offers, didn't find what he was looking for, and it seemed to me out of spite joined the Cavaliers, our biggest adversaries at the East with a contract that the Celtics would've been willing to make from the very beginning.

If Jeff's going to be hanging around the team this year, I wonder if it's possible to get him some kind of salary as a special assistant coach or something for the season.

I kind of agree with Thumper on this one.  If he's going to be around and the team wants him around, they should find some way to get him a paycheck.

I agree with this too. The team has enough money, sign him to some type of non-player job that doesn't count against the cap. It shouldn't be for a ton of money, but they could give him a decent, normal working guy salary for a year.

Not trying to be cynical, but how do you know the team has enough money to sign him to some type of non-player job that doesn't count against the cap?  So many of us assume that corporations "have it" to give to employees.  Almost like it's an obligation for companies/corporations/teams to share it.

I do agree though, that it would be a nice gesture.  I really hope they hook him up.

Well, unfortunately nowadays in america, it's only the corporations that "have it". I'm sure Wyc Grousbeck and Steve Pagliuca have more than enough to invest 60K or so in the happiness and loyalty of a future star player who is down on his luck and his health.

60K? Wyc wipes his nose with that much.
They'll pay for his medical bills and throw him a lackey job worth at least 100-150K.
It's nothing to them financially this year but it's everything in the long run when we want to resign him and those gestures influence his decision on where to play.

How many lackey jobs do you know of that pay a 6 figure salary?

Congressmen and senators for starters, that's over 500.

*facepalm* Really?
