I have very little interest in Reggie Evans. He can't play defense and he can't play offense. Nice rebounder but a complete liability on either end of the floor.
I'd rather snare his teammate Joey Dorsey who can both rebound and play defense.
Really like how quick Dorsey is to the ball; I remember him running circles around Shaq earlier this year. I remember he was likened to Ben Wallace, minus some of the athleticism, coming out of Memphis.
Do Danny and Doc ever pursue this type of player though? Looking at the big men rotations of the Danny/Doc era, rebounding seems to be pretty low on the totem pole of vital big men characteristics. Raef, Blount, Scal, Gomes, Sheed, Baby, Jermaine, Erden: some very poor rebounding big men have seen heavy rotation minutes on our teams, good and bad.
Leon Powe/PJ Brown was the only solid rebounding back-up big combination that I can remember us fielding, and both brought more to the table offensively than a guy like Dorsey.
Well, you're ignoring the three most important big men of the Danny/Doc era - KG, Perk, and Big Al Jeff.
There have been plenty of mediocre rebounders out there, but in part that's because of how some of these guys were acquired (late draft picks, cheap free agents). But I would agree that Danny seems to like "stretch" big men, guys who can open up the floor. They really seemed optimistic that Murphy would be able to be that player for us this year - although when healthy, Murphy was also great on the boards.
None of them were free agent signings (though to be fair, neither were Raef, Gomes or Erden). My point is that rebounding doesn't seem to be a primary attraction for Doc and Danny given that we've employed and played so many bad rebounders in the last 6 years.
Well, yeah, point being that these were all guys they acquired through late draft picks or cheap signings or guys that other teams were looking to unload in trades. Players you would expect to have warts.
What I do think is fair to say, though, is that Danny has really only drafted two big men in the first round since he came here. He drafted Perk late in the first (OK, *technically* it was a trade but Memphis picked him for us). He drafted Big Al at #15.
Other than that, his first round picks have been:
Avery Bradley
JR Giddens
Gerald Green
Delonte West
Tony Allen
Rondo
Marcus Banks
He's acquired a lot of PFs in the second round (Baby, Powe, 'Gody, Gomes, Brandon Hunter), including a lot of 'tweener-forwards. The tendency that I see is to use the 1st rounders on wings and the 2nd rounders on bigs, which may speak partially to why we've trotted out so many limited players.
