I personally think the Sox needed a little better then a 4th outfielder due to Drew's injury issues.  If/when Drew goes down, is Baldelli going to be able to go a week straight? He had issues playing 3 days in a row for Tampa.  If they go sign Kotsay, then I'd be semi-satisfied since he can play first base and the outfield.  Remember, Sean Casey is gone, we do need a back up first baseman.  The utility guy will probably be Lugo as awful as a utility guy he will be.  Smoltz has been my #2 behind tex, I felt the Sox had a need for pitching, and other then CC or Burnett, I wanted Smoltz.

  • I left Indiana. Because it was horrible.
I hate this clown.  I met him years ago and he's a total Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline..

Weird.  I ran against him in high school and he was always the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet.  Since Hendricken was the private school closest to where I grew up, a lot of my friends went to school with him as well, and have had nothing bu nice things to say about the guy.

All things considered, he was probably the greatest student athlete in RI history...all state in 4 sports, D-I scholarship offers in 2 of them, and 2nd in his graduating class in one of the better private schools in the state.

Maybe he's changed since then (it's been a while), but I remember him being a class act, all the way.
CB Draft Bucks: Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Tobias Harris, Zach LaVine, Aaron Afflalo, Jeff Green, Donatas Motiejunas, Jarrett Jack, Frank Kaminsky, Lance Stephenson, JaVale McGee, Shane Larkin, Nick Young

DKC Bucks. Also terrible.

I know he's only coming here as a 4th outfielder, but I sure would have liked to have seen him come here as a non-roster spring training invitee or something...I just don't trust that he can play
Yup

The deal is tiny ( I think I read under 1 million guaranteed).  That isnt enough that the sox wont drop him if they feel he isnt going to help.

Although I think he will.  if they can get the disease under some sort of control, he is a very good defensive player (with a cannon for an arm) who can play all three positions.  fast on the base paths and has some pop.  I think he could be (it all hinges on the disease) and outstanding 4th of.

I think it is more like 500,000 guaranteed.  Its clear they signed him as a luxury.

Now I wouldn't be surprised if they sign another guy who has the flexibility to play in the outfield, as well as back up some infield positions.

Baldelli to wear #5.

My first thought was Buckner and then the article reminded me that Nomar wore it was well.  Oh yeah, I remember him.

It will be interesting to see who the Sox get to fill in the rest of their bench. Cora is a free agent. Not sure if they want him back but I've always liked him. Kotsay fits the description of a guy who can play both the infield and outfield. Hinske is out there as well. I was browsing the list of free agents on ESPN, and some of the names out there are pretty surprising. There are a lot of former big name players that are complete afterthoughts this off season. For instance, have you heard the name Ken Griffey Jr. once this off season? He's a free agent.

I like the move and I like his versatility. He can hit for power, for average, play all three outfield positions and has good speed and great base running ability. If he, Smoltz and Penny can be healthy it's a good offseason. But that's a huge if.

Talent wise he's great for a 4th outfielder, the issue isn't him though, it's Drew's injury issues.  The sox will need to get another outfielder such as Kotsay to be able to spell Baldelli.  I personally feel as if Baldelli is more of a 5th outfielder due to his condition.  A 4th outfielder should be someone who can play every day in case of an injury.
