The third quarter could not have been more of a disaster for Boston. The Celtics were outscored, 39-14, committed eight turnovers (six by Jayson Tatum!) and had only one assist. It would be hard to pick the worst moment for turnover-plagued Boston, but it might have been when Jaylen Brown was viciously stuffed at the rim by Bam Adebayo on a drive to the bucket.

“They out-toughed us, out-physicaled us,” said Celtic coach Ime Udoka. “I didn’t think we responded well on either end of the court. We got muscled around and lost our composure. They just came out and imposed their will . . . we all got caught up in officiating in that quarter.”

All true. All bad. All inexcusable, even with tired legs. The Celtics gripe to officials more than any team in recent memory and it’s a bad look for this good team.

Physicality is what catapulted the Heat to the NBA Finals two years ago, and nothing has changed, at least for the opening game. The Celtics are going to need to increase their toughness, stop screaming at the officials, and stay focused through these types of onslaughts, because they’re going to happen again.

“Of course [we need to be tougher],” Udoka said. “That was the message after the quick timeout at the start of the half. They were going to increase their physicality.

“It was a little disappointing that we got caught off guard as far as that. But simple cleanups. We reverted back [to bad habits] in the third quarter and it cost us.”

I just don't understand why these guys complain to the officials so much. I get why fans do it, we're sitting in our loungerooms yelling at the TV. I get occasionally getting mad when they get hacked, I'm sure it's annoying. But complaining isn't going to get a call reversed. Has a non-referral call ever been reversed in the NBA because a player complained?

I've actually seen a ref reverse himself because Lebron complained. At least once if not twice.

I have absolutely seen this happen once as well. Call against Lebron, he came sprinting over crying, and the ref changed the call.
