That was a high price to pay for a 35-year-old who had underachieved on an big contract with Philadelphia, but had been angling for months to return to Boston ahead of the eventual deal, according to league sources.

I suspect Danny was involved in Al's return as this was a very early off-season deal (June 17, 2021) and this sounds like the deal started to percolate several months earlier. Mannix also claimed last night that BOS was the only team willing to include an asset (draft pick) to get him and that other teams wanted an asset to take him.

"Every team that called Oklahoma City, they wanted the Thunder to attach an asset to take Al Horford," Mannix said Monday on Boston Sports Tonight. "The Celtics were the only team to offer something in exchange."

We got hosed!!

I’m hoping this is sarcasm. C’s traded away a player in Kemba that turned out to be unplayable and had a worse contract for a starting caliber PF who has been a top 2 or 3 player for Boston this postseason.
that's what we know about Kemba now.  at the time of the deal, he was not considered unplayable whereas Al was actually not playing.  makes me question again Brad's deal making abilities --> if no one else was offering an asset, could he have offered something less than that first rounder to make the deal happen?

No, it was pretty clear after the Miami playoff series that Kemba was a complete Liability on the court.  Spolestra made that obvious with his strategy in attacking him every time the Heat had the ball. Sam Presti is a pretty smart guy and he’s not going to take on a player owed a ton of money that has negative trade value without getting something in return. Once Walker was in OKC there wasn’t a team they could trade him to, which resulted in the buyout. Then Kemba signs on with NY and is ultimately benched. I see him struggling to catch on with a team much like IT did .

I thought it was pretty clear in the Toronto series before that even.  Yeah we won it in 7, but FVV and Lowry repeatedly went at and destroyed Kemba that series.
being unplayable is different from being a liability.  unplayable is someone that brings nothing to the table at all.  a liability is someone that has something to offer but not enough to compensate for their negatives.  A liability can be put in a situation where they can help the team whereas someone who's unplayable can't.

His last year with the C’s he shot 42% from the field and 36% from 3pt. So you have an average shooter who is a complete liability defensively which makes him unplayable. He’s basically in the same boat as IT.
It's sad because he never really seemed to develop into a decent shooter off the catch. He was always good off the dribble, but now he can't really create space so his ability to generate those mid-range looks isn't there.

I still think he can get a bench role, but it'll take some work.

I think Kemba is done but there might be a team that wants a vet who's a truly good guy to mentor their young guys.

Yeah, I thought IT was absolutely useless but Charlotte found a role for him. Maybe Kemba can too

I think the bar is so low for the NBA HOF that he probably gets in.

This. Once they let Toni Kukoc in, well…

🤣 this is a hilarious satire of the Danny mentality of “I must win the trade or I lose the trade”

Both the Horford and White trades were win-win for us and the trading partners. Trades do not occur unless both sides perceive the trade to be mutually beneficial. That’s why it’s absolutely asinine (and counter-productive) to have the mentality “we must win the trade or we lose the trade”

At 35yo, hope he has more gas still in the tank.  Pretty confident he does since his minutes appear to have been managed well this year.

BTW, who here knew that Al was actually younger than Lebron?  I just realized it typing this message and looking at ages of players.

Greenly, humour me.

You've been kidnapped. You've been held hostage. Your only condition for release: you have to choose to be nice about either The Russians or Toni Kukoc for the rest of your days.

Which do you choose?
