Well the Rockets fans were glad to see the back of him. I guess it's safe to say it didn't work out over there. Might have been a case of user error on Scott Silas' part.

Brad Stevens on @Toucherandrich: "We talked so many iterations of deals over the last two months. I can't even tell you how many. We thought after adding Derrick (White), we'd do one more small move. But the (Daniel) Theis thing came up late. And we've loved Theis for a while."

New: Daniel Theis waived a 15 percent trade kicker worth $1.2 million as part of his trade back to the #Celtics, per league sources. The big man is very excited to be back in Boston

Theis is a system player. He’ll look garbage on a garbage team (like the Rockets). I’m very excited to see him back in green. He’s a pretty great big to have off the bench. It’s only when he’s your starter is when you know your roster isnt good enough.

I'm a dumb-dumb and just realized that part of getting Theis means Grant will be getting a lot of SF minutes.

Theis is a big part of the deals yesterday. Combined with White, the C's can now play the same defensive switching scheme for 48 minutes that the starters have been playing. If they want to go with two bigs, Theis allows them to sustain 48 minutes with Robert Williams and Al Horford. If we go small, White and Grant Williams play a bit more. It will be interesting to see if it comes together, but it should.

I am really surprised/pleased that Theis would give up over $1M to return to the Cs.  He will quickly move to the front of my favorite player class.  Solid off the bench big.

Especially since he's not a top earner in the overall scheme of things. Obviously a lot in real world terms but not much in the overall NBA totem pole. He knows Boston was where he found success and he trusts in the culture here.

I'm excited that Theis is coming back. I think the C's have become the best defensive team in the league with him and White now in the rotation. He's probably not going to get many minutes when they're at full strength but he can step right in when needed.

I think he'll help instantly, Al needs to play less minutes.

Jay King had an interview with Brad on the Athletic where Brad explained the reasoning behind the Theis move - insurance for Al and Timelord.

Quote
Why a Theis reunion?

The Celtics acquired Theis partly to give themselves a much better insurance plan behind Al Horford and Robert Williams. Theis’ contract, which has two more fully guaranteed seasons beyond this one, could be seen as a liability, but Stevens said he thinks the big man can help not just for the short term.

Though the Theis trade did not materialize as a major possibility until minutes before the deadline, Stevens said the team had “eyes on” a potential reunion before then.

“And the reason why is because Rob and Al are our guys and they’re playing great, but if you miss any time with those two guys, you can plug Theis in and it’ll be a seamless transition,” Stevens said. “Theis knows how to make our best players better, that’s the best thing he does is he has a great feel for making others around him better, he’s got a savvy for the game. And he can play a role. And so if Rob misses a stretch, Theis can plug in. And off the bench, with Grant (Williams), if we play minutes without Robert or Al on the floor, Theis can play the exact role that those guys are playing now and do so at a high level. So it’s insurance there at that spot with a guy that you know can do it at a high level.”

Reading between the lines, the Celtics did not feel comfortable with Freedom backing up Horford and Robert Williams. Given Horford’s age, Williams’ injury history and the number of minutes those guys have played so far this season, Stevens wanted a more capable defender behind them.

I don’t think there’s much doubt the Cs are going to regret trading for Theis. He’s gonna be 30 this summer, with two more guaranteed years at significant money. It’s not at all hard to imagine Theis being out of the rotation altogether fairly quickly.

The deal smacks of a little bit of a panic move at the last minute for a guy Stevens “likes” when he couldn’t find a value deal, yet wanted Denis out of here (enuff jacking shots DS — we all know ur trying to get paid).

I think it was a bad deal. Stevens should have pushed HOU for at least one asset considering they were bailing the Rockets out of a bad contract they’d done (Theis wasn’t even in their rotation).
