We already have a Pritchard-type player in Edwards. Pritchard is better at running the point but Edwards is every-bit the shooter, even though he hit a cold streak early and never really rebounded. We also have Waters at PG who is developing his shot and is much more scarier on D.
Anyways, Pritchard is a second round prospect and I highly doubt DA drafts him as early as 30th. We have other needs and I think there are better players to be had. I would even pass on him at 46 but that's just me and I'm not saying he won't go that high.
I like Pritchard and think he makes it as a backup PG in the NBA. He is much more of a PG then Edwards. With that said I would not use a 1st rd pick on him or any other player whose ceiling is that of a backup PG.
I think any PG we draft his ceiling is that of a backup PG on our roster. Take Rozier, he is a starting point guard now but he was 3d string on our roster and would be 3rd string if he was still on our roster behind Kemba and Smart. To leap over Smart and Kemba you need an all NBA talent and that ain't happening this draft. So we are drafting a guy to be third fiddle for his whole rookie deal. Pritchard is well suited for that role. So are a bunch of other experienced college PGs but at 30 we can have our pick of them. At 46 we get the real leftovers.
I mainly brought up Pritchard as an example of someone who can do everything we want and need for a 3rd string PG that we can pick low. A lot of people are looking at guards who accomplished less than Pritchard did as a freshman, let alone his career, at the 17th pick and I think that's a mistake. I think even picking Devon Dotson, or Tre Jones at 30 is a better pick for us then taking Theo Maledon or RJ Hampton at 17. Especially if it lets us get a versatile defender who can score like Saddiq Bey or Devin Vassell at 17. We need to grab a big at 26, so I really only think we need to be talking about late first early second round PG prospects.
We are a salary cap crunched title contender so we need to draft players that can contribute right now. If we are in the finals next year and say Smart rolled his ankle in game 3, and we had to cut Wanamaker for roster space over the off season, who would you trust more to give us 20 minutes a game for the rest of the series, RJ Hampton or Pritchard. I think where we are with our roster is we need to draft solid bench players who are ready to play like G. Williams was. The only swing for the fences prospect really available to us is Aleksej Pokuševski and he is not ready to play meaningful minutes yet.
