Starters=Kemba, Brown, Tatum, Aaron Gordon, Turner
Bench=Wanna, Fournier, Theis, Kanter

In my scenario traded Hayward, Smart, GW, Edwards and picks for Fournier, Aaron G., and Myles Turner.  8)

No we don't need another big...not at all.  We can handle the bigs we will face in the playoffs just fine with the guys we got...sure...

There are definitely lineups where Kanter offers more than Theis.

That may be the case if the opponent isn't equipped to run Kanter off the floor.

I think Philly may be one such matchup.

Against Miami, Milwaukee, Indiana, or Toronto, though?  I don't think the Celts are likely to be able to get away with playing Kanter very much.
Kanter has played just fine against all of those teams this year and on the whole has outperformed Theis against those teams.  Kanter also did quite well in the playoffs for Portland last year.  Even against GS he was fine (he ended up +5 in the series and was a + in 3 of the 4 games).

Theis is definitely more mobile, but he is a worse offensive player and rebounder by a wide margin.  I believe those 2 things are more important to winning playoff basketball games, then have a more mobile defender.  There are ways to counteract a pick and roll.  they've been doing it since the advent of the pick and roll with centers far less mobile than Kanter.

Kanter is better than Theis.  I think he is fine coming off the bench as an instant offense type player, but come playoff time, the better players should be playing the bigger and more critical roles.  And in this case that is Kanter.

Playoff rotation won't be set until we know what happens at the trade deadline.

I would argue that projecting a playoff rotation should dictate what happens at the trade deadline.

The game against the Sixers magnified the flaw of the Boston Celtics.

Chances of Ainge making a move on or before the trade deadline just increased substantially.

Kemba, Brown, Tatum, Hayward, Theis, Smart

These guys will get most of the minutes

Wanamaker, I expect will get regular time but not much.

Then pick among the following for spot minutes depending on matchups:

Semi, GRANT, Kanter, Timelord (if healthy)

Nobody else should see the floor unless it's a blowout.

In particular I would say that Kanter should probably not see the floor against a quality opponent unless it's the Sixers.  Anybody else will likely be able to pick and roll him right off the floor.

The ideal bench for this team would swap out Wanamaker, Semi, and Kanter for a VanVleet / Barea type guard, a PJ Tucker type wing, and a solid two-way big a la Amir Johnson circa 2015.

There's no realistic way for the Celts to revamp the bench like that, though.  Even so, I think they can go far in the playoffs, depending on matchups.

I agree with your ideal bench assessment but would add that a stretch 4 capable of playing spot minutes at the 5 would also be really useful. Looking around the league at vets on bad (likely selling teams) on cheap deals (under 6 mill). The pickings are really slim

Spark plug Guard: IT Wiz, Ish Smith Wiz,

Big Wing: ??

Stretch 4: M Morris DET, Bjelica SAC (6.8mill)

2-way big: ??

A perfect example of a team with a great rotation but ended up being a bust in the playoffs is the 2018 Raptors.

That was the last year of DeRozan as a Raptor.

The Raps were #1 in the east that season and their bench was very deep.
But the Cavs swept them in the 2nd round of the playoffs.

While it's true the bench plays a big role in the regular season, in the playoffs, the starters will play more while the bench will play less.

So even if the Celts improve their bench, Celts will still not go far in the playoffs if the starting unit is flawed.

This is why I posted a trade scenario. People don't have like my idea. But my thinking was the starting line up needs a change not just the bench. I changed the starters to have better defense and rebounding while added a scorer to the bench

I would likely be on board your idea. I mean, I don't know how you are getting Turner, Gordon, and Fournier for Hayward, Smart, and change, but it definitely balances the line-up and gives us a scoring boost off the bench (Fournier is averaging 19ppg on 48% shooting, 41% 3pt).

I always thought the perfect time to trade Hayward would be at the 2020 deadline. Any time before would be looked upon as harsh and he can just choose to leave like Horford if you wait until the end of the season. I actually like Hayward and would prefer to keep him (and sign him beyond this season), but this deal provides a lot of value.
