Landing "KG" doesn't happen often at all, simply because there have been so few guys like KG in the league, ever.
People are rationalizing those trades just because we missed out. Not all of it is Ainge's fault, mind you. But it's mind numbing to read all these posters chirping about how these perennial allstars aren't really that good. Or that we "dodged a bullet" by not acquiring them. Please.
I would honestly rate PG, Butler and DMC higher than Hayward or Horford and yet these are the players these same people support acquiring? GH and Big Al are great players but neither are perennial allstars nor all-defense players. Id wager a lineup of Butler-PG-DMC would fare better than IT-Hayward-Horford. Not saying it's possible to have achieved that line up. But I'm just pointing out how ridiculous the notions are of "they're not really all that good".
