Sources: Seventy minutes until deadline -- and Dwight Howard remains firmly in Houston. Rockets know how to make deals, so it isn't over.

Sources: So far, Boston is sitting out the Dwight Howard talks.
whos gonna blink first?

If anyone blinks, it will be Houston. But I'm guessing that there's no blinking for the next 52 minutes.

2018 1st round pick Cavs are trading to Portland is top 10 protected for 2 years. Cavs also created new trade exception of $9.6M

OK so in summation of our ongoing discussion about Portland, they received a pick likely to be in the 20s 3 drafts from now for the right to pay Varajao like $12.5mil (unless I'm wrong about his money being guaranteed next year). And they still haven't reached the floor element, should they care to.

Objectively, I'd say that's somewhere in the middle of what we've been debating on who pays who for value. Anyway, what's done is done (unfortunately).

Don't have time to analyze it all, heading to a meeting now, to study the pros and cons... so I'll get back to it later.

Anyways, the main position of mine was when there's competition one can't assume you'll manage to trade what you dump at no cost, and getting further value on top of it.

Like in a vacuum, if it's only Boston and Portland negotiating then sure I'd see them trading a 2nd rounder to reach the floor. I mean, that was my position months ago when this idea first surfaced. But the mistake we were all doing, including me, is that we didn't factor the value other teams might gain from such trade and what they'd be willing to pay, if anything, to acquire that value (dump salary + TPE which can be traded at the draft).

I follow. Let's see when all the trade details here -- and anything else Portland does before 3pm -- shake out.

Meanwhile, more fuel for your fire, BuschC.

To my knowledge, neither BOS/CHA has ever shown any interest in making a real offer for Dwight. I'm not sure any team has. 52 minutes to go.

There's as much of a trade market for Dwight as we expected, seems like.

And why would there be?  If Houston's not going to resign him, trading for him just means his agent demands more years/$.  You'd have to really really want him to be willing to pay extra twice (trade and contract).

We probably don't see Dwight is worth the risk/reward of being a coach/chemistry killer with what we got going on

Welp that was a boring trade deadline.

That team wins nothing.

I seriously doubt the Hawks buy on Howard this summer. Has anyone anywhere ever suggested that ATL has any interest in Howard (instead of the other way around)?

I think the debate on whether Portland would get paid for their cap space or pay out to reach the floor is settled at this point.  Varejao's next year is the only factor that seems to speak against it.

Keep reading Howard wants out .

It's a mess in Houston already.

They won't be happy with an unhappy childish Howard .....that will not play out well.

Yeah I mean I get that Houston and ATL want value back for their stars but:

Houston: Dwight is unhappy, there are stories leaking about him and Harden disliking each other, he's going to want a ton of money this off season, they just gave up D-Mo for peanuts, Denver owns their 1st rounder this year, they might not even make the playoffs and they're definitely not winning a championship this year.

Atlanta: they're losing in the second round, they're never winning a championship with their current roster, they're going to either lose Horford for nothing or pay him $30 million when he's 36 years old.

So they're in a bad spot, but it takes leadership to actually do something about it.  They're just going down with the ship.

I posted those above. Sure, but the two things are related. Paul Allen chose late picks over cash. He's spending for those picks. My error is not recognizing that's Allen's way -- always has been. many other owners (especially in small markets) go the other way, at least as it pertains to largely second round material.

But good for the Blazers -- nicely done. You need cracks in the draft if you're a team based in Portland, and Allen has cash to burn.
